1964 Parisienne oil advice

Just a question, is this an example of an engine needing a high ZDDP oil like the HDEO mentioned above ? I just thought all older engines needed the high zinc content to protect the internals better ?

If so is a there a time frame for the cutoff ?

Older Engines with Flat-Tappet Cams need higher ZDDP. They have reduced the level of ZDDP in modern day oils to prevent damage to the Catalytic converters. In your car you shouldn't have one, so you could up the ZDDP with an additive. The amount of miles you drive per oil change (1,000/yr) wouldn't warrant it though and I wouldn't worry about it...

Hi,
Indy - Yes we do have a few around this area. I think there are some '56 Bel Airs and a couple of Parisiennes. There are some Mustangs and Corvettes too. All owned by enthusiasts of course

Most of their engines run on Castrol's RX Super 15W-40 HDEO

When these engines were new never tasted much ZDDP and their designers and the Oil Companies were still looking at a number of AW and other options..................
Life to reringing was around 50k to 80k miles

I was actually wondering about the zinc level and I'm a little embarrassed to say I don't know if has a flat tappet cam.

I have only seen one other 60s vintage (not the rebadged Caprice from the 80s) on the road. That was in Los Angeles about 5 years ago and haven't seen another since. There are a lot of Canadian winter visitors here and they seem to get a kick out the car.

I'll dig up some pics and get them posted soon...

I may give Rotella 10w-30 a try. Probably would be good to get the extra cleansers in there though it has been maintained well.

I had a '65 Parisienne 2dr hardtop which I bought new in '65 and traded in '68 for a Riviera. My '65 had a 300 HP 327 with a 4 speed stick... no power steering or power brakes. One of my favourite cars..

Used Shell X-100 10w-30 in it at the time.

If that were 100% true, the Jeep 4.0L engines would have been extinct by now.

Read it on this board for yourself. It has been reduced and does affect these style engines. (Parisienne included). The only real difference is with the reduction of ZDDP in modern day oils, engines such as these can't run the oil as long as a car that isn't equipped with Flat-Tappet Cams.
