My neighbor is not good at the maintenance minder thing. I did his OC in April '24. He has gone 12,200 miles. I have the filter wrapped currently so I can cut it apart some. Why did all the pleats do this? They were straight when installed. Toyota recommends filter every 10k but oil every 5k. I can only try so much. Too much pressure with the ends? The factory one has no end caps.

April installed -

Today changed (new Toyota filter installed)- The inside of the pleats have that same arrow pattern.

I once received a "free" cartridge style STP oil filter for my 4Runner with purchase of oil. I measured the height at 4 locations with a machinist caliper, compared readings with the OEM and quickly decided to not install the STP filter. I don't remember the measurements. It was too many years ago.

Yeah, not great looking. Looks like it sort of collapsed for whatever reason. Based on the media appearance, the new one on the right looks to be one those newer coo made in Brazil XG cartridges. FB moved production of the Pentastar XG cartridge from S Korea to Brazil, thinking others too. I would not automatically think the Endurance FE results would be the same though.

Fwiw, the newer Super Tech cartridge for Toyota applications has been posted here several times, it looks very nice. Even more so for the price.

There has been some comments on the forum that the new ST9972 white media disintegrates during an OCI. Someone posted a comment on the Walmart forum that they cut and open a spin on ST filter and found the media in bad shape. Recently, I bought a new media ST9972 and it has wire backing and has similar construction to my old favorite unicorn’s 🦄 tear-drop Fram Ultra xg9972.

Been using the TRD filter, but no longer available. I might just run the Toyota 04152-YZZA5 and not look back. It seems to work fine for all the normal people that don’t obsess about this stuff. A filter that fits right and doesn’t fail and $5 a piece is fair. Never heard of problems with this, except maybe does not have as fine of a micron rating, and my Toyota dealer around the corner will always have them in stock.

It's true I haven't seen a post use ST9972 posted, but the new ones that are wire backed look excellent. Never seen a WM Super Tech spin with same media used on that specific cartridge. The term unicorn fits for that cartridge. Can't recall seeing a comment on this forum saying the media "disintegrates". Got a link like to see it. What I've read folks are really happy with their purchase of the ST9972. As for WM comments, I take them with a grain of salt. Again though, ST spin on media not comparable to the new ST9972 media.

just learned the YZZ part # is a value line.
Got a reference for that? I know Toyota has superseded their older part numbers with the YZZ line, but I have never seen anything that makes them market those filter as a value line. The TRD line is another animal all together and is pushed through their aftermarket catalog and not their normal dealership service parts supply chain.

If you go to Fram site they list FE Endurance as "Wire Backed" under "description details" , but do not show the XG (Ultra Synthetic) as being "Wire Backed". So, we can assume the collapse of the XG filter shown here was not reinforced with a wire back.

The car care nut mentioned this toward then end of his video that discussed counterfeit filters. I will look for it and add soon.

Thanks for that.

I think "value line" is a misnomer when it appears to be the only filter you can now get save some NOS laying around under the previous part numbers. Everything I find says the YZZ is a superseding part number on any Toyota OEM part website I go to looking for the older part numbers.

It looks like the filter wasn't pushed all the way up in the filter housing and was crushed a bit.

🤨 the original el cheapo paper filter has no wire backing or even end caps to keep it together yet nothing collapses during use.

We can literally conclude that the POS Fram is a turd and is either the wrong size (literally a millimeter or two off, due to the plastic end caps adding to the total size) or it’s straight up a complete piece of JUNK, like already concluded decades ago (think orange can of death) 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’ve seen the crushed filter on the many Toyota engines I service. Sometimes it comes out perfectly fine and straight and at times I also saw the bent / crushed media and wondered what could have possibly caused that. 🤔🤦🏻‍♂️
