...another piece to the reality check I think,(although not sure)..would be that this motor "revs" at very low rpm's..for comparison..over the weekend I was driving a 2009 impala 3.5L ...@ 60mph that motor turns over a 1000rpm "less" then my subi 2.5L, ..both take about 4 qts of oil...

Nice UOA. This newly formulated PYB is looking like really nice oil, especially for the price dino goes for. Both my local WM and CT are running it on sale pricing, and if its the same new formula as this I will be picking it up. Which begs the question, what is the easiest way to confirm I'm getting the new formula? Look for GF-5 on the back label?

GF-5 has been on the back label since they changed the cleaning claim from 15% to 40%. I think the best way would be to look for SN instead of SM. I bought some last week @ WALMART and it still had the SM.

Historically, PYB 5w30 SM sheared to a 5w20 in 3 to 5K in many, if not most cars.

Has the OP's oil sheared, and is now thickening back up, maybe too much?

What would be the implications of an oil shearing then thickening? More varnish/sludge?

YO!!!! thank heavens!!! about time :) I love PYB. never fails to impress.

Some thoughts based on all the comments.
1. Buster, although there may be a little groupIII in GF-5 PYB, I still think it's predominately groupII+.
2. I believe the moly count has been raised for the GF-5 oils.
3. Let's try to objectively determine if the oil had any life remaining in it, excluding its mileage. The TBN was great. Was it because it may have thickened slightly? Need to do a VOA next time to get a starting 100C viscosity. I think I will initially omit posting the mileage on my next OCI so that we can focus on the figures. Maybe I need to get the oxidation results.
4. And lastly, yes the engine rarely sees much over 3000 rpm, is driven conservatively (no full throttle usage), but I did run it 11% past 0% OLM so that has to count for something.
5. Do you think the 0.4% insol reading meant I exceeded the limit of the PureOne filter or is something else at work here? I may try the Fram Extended Guard filter.
Anyway, I think I like PYB better than PP, so it or GF-5 Chevron will go back in soon.
Thanks again for all the great comments.

Not here... The bottles say 40%, but the back label reads GF-4.....

Yep, same here.

Read carefully guys. The new bottles say EXCEEDS GF-5 on the back.

Take care, Bill

The wear looks amazing, and the oil had plenty of additives.

However, being a novice, does a conventional like this keep the engine as clean as a synthetic? Obviously, who wouldn't want to use conventional with a report like this.

Could other factors be going on though? Could there be sludge over time, etc. or does a report like this 100 % clear a conventional as just as good in this case?

Have been using PENNZOIL conventional motor for over 10 years and never an issue with sludging . Would do oil changes every 3 > 4000 miles . Very harsh driving conditions as well .
