However, being a novice, does a conventional like this keep the engine as clean as a synthetic? Obviously, who wouldn't want to use conventional with a report like this.

Could other factors be going on though? Could there be sludge over time, etc. or does a report like this 100 % clear a conventional as just as good in this case?

Any dino should keep an engine clean as long as the OEM intervals are followed (including severe service schedule if criteria are met), provided the car is mechanically sound.

Different detergent/dispersant packages and base oil mixes going into the new GF-5 spec oil will make it harder to justify the old generalization about synthetic cleaning better IMHO.

I checked the 5qt jug I have and sure enough, it "exceeds 2010 GF5 requirements". As long as the jug is the Mobil 1 style and it says "cleans 40% more", that's the one.

Good times.

...another piece to the reality check I think,(although not sure)..would be that this motor "revs" at very low rpm's..for comparison..over the weekend I was driving a 2009 impala 3.5L ...@ 60mph that motor turns over a 1000rpm "less" then my subi 2.5L, ..both take about 4 qts of oil...
I will have to agree !!!

Back in the late 80's to the mid-90's my uncle had an old 350 Chevy Caprice which he drove 90% of the time on Interstate 80 traveling to work. He used nothing but Pennzoil 10w-30 and routinely ran the oil out to 12,000 mile OCIs. The car had well over 200,000 miles on it when he drove it to the junk yard because the body rotted out and would no longer pass PA state inspection.

Working tonight so I'll keep this brief. After I do a short run with PP (mileage just isn't as good--go figure), I'm going back to PYB. I'm going to blend the 5w-30 with 1 quart of 5w-20 to reduce the HTHS to 2.9. I'll do a 0% OLM UOA and ease upward 5% at a time to see if the viscosity is thickening.
And if anyone sees GF-5 Chevron let me know. The 5W-30 Chevron has 2.9 HTHS right out of the bottle, no blending necessary.

Take care,
Gary

May? Are you addressing me?

shrooms,
I think postjeeprcr was asking where I got the GF-5 PYB back in May, it was at WM. The SM--exceeds GF-5 statement on the back of the 5 quart jug. The consensus opinion here is that it was the newest formulation equivalent to the SN/GF-5 5W-30 available in WM now.

The gap is definitely closing. I bought 6 jugs of the new PYB last week. I'll be using it and selling the older dino jugs I bought last year

I notice the great improvement in oils since Chevron started using the Hydroisomerized [GPII] base oils in the early 1990s .The insides of engines at work looked really good and the engines lasted. Except for special purposes or needs syn really isn't needed unless you want to spend extra $$ to show your ignorance in oils . "syn oil at less than 5,000/6 month mile oil change intervals for example" So I have in most applications reduced my dependence on expensive syn oils.
