Mobil down here have (from time to time) Delvac XHP Extra, which is a Euro spec (CF) high ash, 10W-40 made up of a lot of group III

Here is the web page for Amsoil XLO, their 10W40.
http://www.amsoil.com/products/xlo.htm

You'll note it is from their XL-7500 series. The XL-7500 oils used to be Group III. The advertising on that page states "meets or exceeds"
* API SL
* SAE J300
* ILSAC GF-3, GF-2
* Chrysler MS 10440, MS6395H
* Ford WSS-M2C205A, WSS-M2C153G
* GM 4718-M
* ACEA A1, B1
* JASO VTW

I think that means "we think it would beat these specs but we didn't want to spend the money on certification through the spec authors."

Whoops.
They have two other 10W40s... one is a motorcycle oil, and the other is Amsoil AMO.
Amsoil AMO has a web site here:
http://www.amsoil.com/products/amo.html

And oils from this line of Amsoil tend to be Group IV or V. They claim API SL as well, but I'll imagine they didn't pay for certification on this oil either. I believe Amsoil's only three genuine, certifiable API oils are:
(XLF) XL-7500 Synthetic 5w30 Motor Oil
(XLT) XL-7500 Synthetic 10w30 Motor Oil
(XLM) XL-7500 Synthetic 5W-20 Motor Oil
and *maybe* also
(PCO) SAE 15w40 Synthetic Blend Diesel Oil

All Amsoil oils exceed the API minimalist specs. This has been beat to death. I will admit the coming SM, GF-4 is a bit more rigorous, but most of the changes don't apply to XW-40. And certainly Amsoil won't need to reformulate to meet this. To some extent it is the money on the other hand it's the whole API will control the formula politics.

Amsoil actually makes 3 10W-40's. XLO, AMO and AMF.

The overpriced XL series designed for API is a very good group III oil. This oil is 100% API certified and Amsoil still uses "meets or exceeds".

The AMO is an ok group IV oil, just and old formulation that needs updating. It meets the diesel requirements but is not my first choice. I would favor the 5w30 HDD, the full syn 15w40 (API certified, btw) and the new 5W-40.

The AMF is the motorcycle oil. I believe it is the same basic formula as the AMO.
