Two widgets make this a clean job. One if you don't need the wrench or you plan to use a donaldson (no flats.) Park the truck for long enough to allow the oil to drain back and break siphon across the filter. The filter will only be 2/3 full. From there, drop it down to the crossmember, spin the plug on, and pull it out. All done through the access hole in the fender liner. Do the reverse with your pre-filled filter. Since I got the plug I haven't spiled a single drop.
Votex drain plug for added style points when you use the hose to drain into a jug rather than a catch pan.
See how Ram built a catch pan into the cross member with a drain point? If you're in hurry to change the oil and can't wait for drain down, they thought of you. That or you need to fish some plastic bags around the filter before dropping it. Done it that way too.
I will gladly deal with the restricted filter access to have radius arm front suspension over the prior four link. (The cross member was changed in 2013/2014 when the front suspension was changed.) Oil filter relocation kits are an unnecessary liability and expense. I'm not pulling an intake to do oil changes.
