10k OCI Possible for me?

I drive a 98 Infiniti I30, Vq30de, Automatic, 109,000 miles. Since about 70k its been being fed syn, GC, M1 or PP. Always 30 weight (5Wor 0w)

Recently i switched over to Mobil 1 0w40, no ill effects. However im wondering with that oil, a M1-110 Filter, a tad bit of LC and SLOB, can i go 10k between changes? or more?

Most of my driving starts in the city, for about 2 miles, then is on the highway for about 10, i dont beat on her too much, but im not afraid to push her every so often. I'm in upstate NY if that helps...

So if this was your car what OCI would you do?

Only a used oil analysis can tell you definately if you can go 10k miles. Nissan products are notorious for fuel dilution so I would be apprehensive about a 10k run.

What does "no ill effects" mean/define?

Personally - with a vehicle that exceeds 100K on the odometer, I wont excceed 6K without a used oil analysis.

Going by the way you answered the questionnaire, it doesn't seem like you're one of those long drain guys. First of all, those long drain guys don't like changing oil. They try to say that they're just getting the best value for their money, when in reality, they just don't like changing oil.

10,000 miles is too far to go on an OCI in my opinion; the main reason I say that is because of the dirt that gets passed the air filter, not because I think the oil won't hold up. It's the micron size particles of dirt that do the most amount of damage to an engine.

Modern oils have dispersants to hold the dirt particles in suspension, but there's only so much dirt they can handle. At some point in time, a motor oil goes from being a lubricant, to being a liquid abrasive; that may be overemphasising my point, but you get the idea.

As far as the oil itself, I just don't see the point in running an oil until the very last molecule is used up; oil is so much cheaper than the cost of a new engine.

What would you say to changing your oil every 4 months, would that be too often for you?

It's more of a time efficiency thing. Gives more time to sitting and flipping ..or clicking... while providing a feeling of superior ingenuity

I'd say that he can surely make 10k on a few oils without too much trouble. The used oil analysis probably won't be to BITOG standard ..but also probably won't have a whole lot of ill effect. YMMV. Oils (other than an Amsoil product) that can do this without to much stress are the HDEO oils. They're not for everyone. When you start getting out there, filtration plays a bigger role than it does with the 3-5k crowd.

I didn't see an annual mileage. So far I see 24 miles of daily commuting. Even at 50% over commuting distance for "other" driving, you're only at about 9500/year.

Do a used oil analysis at 6 months with the oil that you've used through the winter. That should be about as bad as it gets. You're really looking for an annual oil change.
