My buddy down the street keeps running Castrol Edge Syntec for 10,000 km using an orange can on his Ford Ranger pickup. I told him it's all good except he should use a TG (grey can) instead of the PH (orange can). He said "nah, it's all good." He told me that he has even considered running 2 OC's with the same orange can.

Now, I don't have an issue with an orange can, but 20,000 km on one is a bit much don't ya'll think?

I think you should grab it when he takes it off, then open it up and post up the picks!

I think it would depend on the engine. A clean engine may do fine. I would want to open one up at 10k to take a look and go from there.

That's only 6000 miles which should be a breeze for that oil and filter.
As far as running 2 intervals with that filter I could be doable but without testing insols and knowing for sure I wouldn't risk it personally.
Maybe suggest he uses the new fram ultra. It's rated for 15000 miles so he can get way with roughly 3 oil changes out of it. Better value and less work in the end.

Advise him to use a MC for his Ford. Also if he is that tight with a buck he should be going 10K (miles) with the oil.

My thought exactly. I would run the oil for at least 20k km and change the OCOD at 10k. Less work and cleanup that way too!

I wouldn't run any filter that long. If a filter is defective and is bypassing oil during the entire OCI you would never know it. Filters are cheap. Spinning a bearing is not.

He's fine for the one run with the orange can but that is way too far to double it up. He should jump to the Ultra if he wants to do that. Or just change his orange one every oil change.

That's really farther than I'd want to go even with a Tough Guard, 20,000 km is 12k miles and Fram says the Tough Guard is a 7,500 mile filter. They say the orange can is a 5k mile filter so the 6k he's doing now with them is pretty reasonable as long as his vehicle is not a sludge monster.

Well, considering what we pay for Castrol edge, I told him to at least put another orange can on there every 10,000 km oil change....it's only a few extra bucks.

Tell him to buy a MC filter - they are cheaper and have a silicone ADBV and have a better bypass valve.
