This little meme seems to have made inroads on BITOG. I just saw someone's sig talk about it, so I figured it might generate some interesting conversation here.

"+1" is just a very short way to say "I agree with what you said, I can't improve upon it in any way, and I want to show support for it." No sense in typing all that out when two characters will suffice.

Evidently at least one person here thinks otherwise, and sees +1 as a totally worthless thing to post. Although I obviously don't agree, I can sort of see where they're coming from.

What do y'all think?

Seriously, though, I think it's a valid shortcut. An opinion/statement becomes more valid if it is supported by multiple users, IMO.

+3

I like to add a comment or 2 when I give the +#, but don't have any reason to retype everything if someone has already said what I wanted to say. Usually they have said it better than I anyway.

It gets the point across pretty clearly.

It also shows 'respect' for other posters, I think, in that you're indicating they said something very well, and not trying to 'outdo' them by saying it another way.....

My opinion is this. If you don't have anything else to add why bother putting your ( +1 ) out there. Can't we just assume that if someone is making a statement that there will be at least a few BITOGers out there who do agree.

The ( +1 ) seems like a waste of time. Like someone is just trying to artificially boost their Post Count.

I liken it to MSN'S Canadian website that usually has a daily poll. There is a question like today's

Do you think you're being over charged a the gas pump?

a Yes, the oil companies are crooked

b No, the price is fair

c Only because of taxes

d I don't know

Why the heck would you bother to chime in on this or similar innane surveys just to answer I DON'T KNOW ???

Either have an opinion or don't bother.

Frankly I don't mind people posting ( +1 ). But i hate the daily msn poll response ( I DON'T KNOW )

Agreed, and that be me.

It just seems like rampant post-whor... well probably can't say that on here... uh, rampant post count incrementing that really adds no value to a thread. Too many forums are full of too many people that add nothing and only self-aggrandize themselves by having a meaninglessly high post count.

I would much rather see folks say they agree and back that up with some explanation. Explicate yourself and help to enlighten others!

I understand this may be an unpopular stance (especially based on the responses to this thread) but I'm fine with having an unpopular opinion that I stand behind for my own reasons. I also fully support anyone to + or X a number to a thread - but wish that your support of the original poster would have some substance behind it.

All forums could use more signal and less noise.

Some forums don't let you post less than 5 characters, meaning you have to elaborate on +1, or at least add a lot of exclamation points!!!!

Seriously though.....+1

Who keeps track of post counts, or pads their post count. You guys ridicule me and make assumptions that I post too much. Why would anyone want to build that number higher....so some around here can accuse them of being paid shills, or UAW lackies with nothing better to do? I dont understand what is being gained in the opinions of those who refer to padding a post count??

I don't really like just seeing a reply that says "+1" by itself. If you say +1, and then add a couple sentences elaborating on why you agree, I think that makes it a little better.

The only reason you are still alive is because chuck norris agrees with you...... Or rather, you agree with HIM.

We need a place where members can check off +1, or -1 at the top of a particular post to rate the post. I think there is something on yahoo where people post questions and then those who answer can be rated by other members.
