1 year oil filters

I see that there are oil filters which are guaranteed to perform up to 20,000 miles or 1 year.

Some filters a guaranteed to perform up to 10,000 miles, but don't designate a time limit.

Can I run one of these 10,000 miles filters and use it for 1 year if I put less than 10,000 miles on the car? Does the filter media degrade over time or something?

For reference I am using Mobile 1 Extended Performance oil and a SuperTech oil filter.

Honda requires an oil change at least once per year and a filter change every other oil change. So it thinks two years on a filter is just fine. And OEM Honda filters, while fine, are nothing extraordinary. So one year should be a walk in the park for almost any filter.

The vehicle is a 2000 Honda Insight. Owners manual says oil change every 7500 (or 1 year) and oil filter change every 15,000 miles (no time interval specified) under normal conditions. The severe schedule is changing both oil and filter every 3750 miles or 6 months.

Thanks guys. I feel much better about going to a 1x/year oil and filter change interval.
