Okay, so I went to good ol' Walmart about an hour ago to pick up a quart, as my friend's Mom's car was almost exactly a quart low.

Can anyone reading this go directly to the oil section, pick one up and go? (and not browse the other stock?)

I didn't. My friend's Mom's car is a later model ('02?) Ford Taurus, so I picked up a quart of Trop Artic 5w30. Poured it in and I now can sleep a little better tonight.

Then I saw M1 0w30 in the big jug. From what I'm reading, oil can't stay thin enough when it cools, so I purchased a couple (all they had). I am planning on using this 0w30 in my Honda....the motor is a rebuilt '88 Acura Integra D16. It has already been broken in.

Does anyone have any reason for me to not do this? Is this going to be better than the 5w30 I'm currently using? (I'm hoping so actually.)

Thanks in advance,
Dave

How long of oil change intervals will you be doing?

The 10w30 might perform a tad better in ca since is always so warm. Shouldnt shear as bad

I would take everything read with a grain of salt so to say. Too much reading with out knowing what we are reading about.

Mobil 1 0W-30 meets key builder specifications:

* GM 6094M, GM 4718M (Corvette spec)
* Ford WSS-M2C929-A
* ILSAC GF-4
* API SM/CF
* ACEA A1/B1

I think it will work fine. It will shear a little but I think that is for greater mpg.

That's what I use. Maybe a bit better than PP in the long run, who knows. Still, a great product. fwiw, PP 5w-30 is thinner at cold 0f temps.

BTW- it should meet A5, if not that's bunk. PP does.

Perhaps this isn't the best place to reveal it, but I tend to stick with 3,500 mile Oil Change Intervals. Perhaps that's a little too soon using synthetic, but it takes me a really long time to do even 3,500 miles.

This is why I asked....(?)

3.5K M8 you are wasting a good deal of money and energy using an synthetic in this manner. But it is your money and your car. But if I where to use M-1 I would use it at twice the interval. Also stick with 0W-30 if you can stand it. It should give you a bit better MPG.

As far as mpg, I dunno where those claims can come from. Shure its' a top-notch formula and as thin as a 30 weight can be at starting temps, but if you plot those two oils, there is narly a visc difference on start and warm. There just isn't. It cranks better st -30f is all you can really say, mpg gain is nimm, in my book.

fwiw, the Forum really needs a set of graphs or graphing tools for people to look at viscs of two specific oils, say German Syntec 0w-30, whose plot crosses Mobil 1 0w-30 TWICE (iirc). How do you explain that to a layman other than with a graph? A general (log) graph of all the typical viscs, everything from 15w-40 down to 0w-20 accross common temps. Another graph might be a dino vs synth of say 30s and maybe 5w-40 vs 10w-40.

Just for people's knowledge, it takes a synthetic 5w-20 to be thinner on start than M1 0w-30. A dino 5w-20 is actually thicker at cold temps.
