Castrol Syntec 0w30 (the German version) is thicker by a fair amount than their 10w30 syntec. EXCEPT when it's about -10 degrees F.

Yep, he's right, as Castrol Syntec 0w30 is 12.2 cst at 100c, while the 5w30 is only 9.7 cst at 100c. So if you mix any of the 5w30 with the 0w30, you'll be thinning out the mixture compared to just running 100% Castrol 0w30.
