Trying to shop locally being I dont have prime, having difficulty locating 0w16 at my local stores.. what gives?

Guess I'll be following manufacturers recommendation on 0w20, however if 0w16 not available on the next oil change 0w20 going back In. I'll be telling Toyota put that in your sump and pump it.

I have been buying 0W16 at Walmart. I will buy a couple jugs when they have it, keep a stash, since during these times availability of almost everything is a variable.

You could also try hitting up the dealer and seeing what they charge per quart. It may be more expensive than Walmart, but what's a couple of bucks here or there?

Checking Toyota is an option I'll drive a little out of my way to check one other Walmart since online inventory is never accurate.

The difference between the two is so minimal. I now use it but that's only because it's available 1 mile from my house 27.00 for 5 quart jug. And it's going into two vehicles that actually spec 0w20 & 5w30. But this next oil change will be a total of 20,000 miles per vehicle using the "WRONG" oil

Very true, I've noticed that their inventory isn't accurate. I usually have a reason to go in every couple weeks, for this or that, and "always" check the oil section for what is in stock. I figure, at this point in the car's life, I can sit on a year's supply of oil, and when an OCI rolls around, make sure to buy another jug to replace what gets pulled at my leisure.

Good thinking and planning, never thought in my life time I'd see a supply issue.. the oil apocalypse

Does your local Napa carry 0w16?

If they don't have it in-stock, they can get it the next day or possibly even the same day. Napa's house brand oil is Valvoline

I just went to Wally’s a while ago and checked out the oil section while we were there. The only 0w-16 available was M1 AFE. All the other brands just had 0w-20 and higher.

The store is in the middle of changing things around but I don’t think that had a effect on the stock.

That's been my experience too, only AFE in 0W16. But I figure, that's good enough, so now I've got like 5 or 6 jugs.

NAPA oil being valvoline base has really impressed me. I got a 24q box of 0w20 for me, my wife, father in law and mother in laws cars to do oil changes for about $120 out the door. Hopped on Rock Auto and got a case of filters for each and were in business.

Wallys seems to always have 0w-16 m1 afe but even then just use 0w-20 since it doesn't really matter. They're so close in viscosity the engine won't care. Outside of the US toyotas that use 0w-16 go up to 10w-40. I wouldn't use 10w-40 but a 30 grade is enough and a 20 grade is just fine too if you can't or don't like the high price and lack of options in 0w-16.

I am also having issues. I believe from reading here (where else  ) that 0w16 has some "magic" in it eg esters that the thicker grades have less of.

Although I still have a few OCIs in the stash (supertech clearance and Castrol from AZ last Dec) I'm picking up some Havoline 0w20 in the 6 quart plastic boxes from WM with free shipping so I don't run the stash completely dry.

I don't think any of that speculation has been substantiated. I doubt the 0w-16's are formulated any differently from the 0w-20's. Some of the companies (Mobil for example) have been working on advanced additive chemistries (not your typical metallics) to improve AW/FM performance under reduced levels of ZDDP, that's in no way specific to just the thin oils. I believe the first oils they made any mention about this were the AFE ones.

There has however been a general shift in chemistry in trying to mitigate some of the issues inherent with the widespread adoption of DI, one of which is of course LSPI, but another is of course fuel dilution. But again, this isn't reserved for a specific grade.

I bet you're proud of that.

OReilly’s has Valvoline 0w16 for $36.99 for 5qts plus a $5 off rebate and it qualifies for free shipping. Spend $100 and get an additional 10% off. I’d be buying four to not have to worry for awhile. Rather do that than giving my money to Walmart.
