The thick oil group seem to be blind to the fact that the worldwide industry is moving to thinner oils and has been for several decades. You are living in the past while our modern engines last longer than before with thinner oils.


I scanned every post in this thread and found nobody say that engines are catastrophically failing.

If our modern day engines are in fact lasting longer with their thinner oils than the engines of yesteryear with their thicker oils and then CAFE doesn't really matter. The thick oil group hasn't provided any evidence to the contrary. Plus, politicians move the CAFE and any "green" effort goal posts often.
 
Nope, nobody is arguing the effectiveness any grade of oil. This is about why, in large part, the Japanese are developing thin, high VI 0W-20 oils and putting language in the owner's manuals to ensure owners use such oils(That's also a requirement of the CAFE regulations).

I seem to remember a post by XS650 that said a higher viscosity oil is need in a bearing with larger clearances because the larger clearance doesn't support a fluid film as well as a smaller clearance.

If modern cars have tighter tolerances, then it should be expected that oils will be less viscous.

Plus all of the advancements in oils, etc....
 
Tempest, there are multiple places in an engine that require different oil characteristics, and viscosity is one of them.

Thinner oils will always reduce the film thickness for a given bearing operation...simple laws of physics.

Manufacturers are redesigning their bearings to allow/use thinner oils, indicating that they feel they are at the margin of reliability at the present time.

They can either use them if need be or sell that credit.

It not that they get additional credit for 0w vs 5w its the percent of additional fuel savings.


I thought they only checked hot CAFE results, as no one wants cold CAFE. Sounds like they are trying anything that does not result in a warranty claim to reduce fuel consumption.
I guess the next move will serious weight saving, with all the smart interiors removed and large holes drilled in every panel.

No question this topic is being beaten to death with no consensus and I gather there won't be one even if this thread ends up being 20 pages long. So far, the CAFE deniers have not backed up their claims with any evidence to the contrary. The best argument I have seen against the use of anything other than 0W is manufacturer's want to make sure "synthetic oil is used". If synthetic is mandatory, why not just make it a a condition to maintaining the warranty and call it a day?

So far, no one has been able to defend the economic benefits of using 0W over 5W. The long term savings in fuel doesn't make up for the added cost for oil changes if we are factoring in 5W (conventional) vs 0W (synthetic).
 
I don't think anyone here is saying xw20's are chewing up engines, clearly they are not, at least not in the US, but it's the motive that's annoying. I believe xw20's are certainly adequate, but I have a hard time believing xw20's are "best" when the same manufacturers are spec'ing 5w30 in the same engines where there is no CAFE.

Like millions of others I've been bullied into using 5w20 in my new KIA with invalid warranty threats if I don't, while me being the oil nerd would rather run a good 5w30. That is irritating, and thus my objection to CAFE.

I make peace with it knowing the engine will still probably out last the rest of the vehicle on 5w20.
 
From what I am seeing from several sources on the Internet, in the US we drive our vehicles more miles than Europe or Australia. There is apparently no effect from Europe using thicker oils and the US thinner oils when it ones to longevity. In fact, given the data, ironically one could argue the opposite.
The vehicles in the US are lasting longer as we move from decade to decade and from thicker oils to thinner oils. I don't understand the complaint over CAFE when in the US we are reaping the benefits of better MPG and our vehicles are lasting longer!?!
 
There are engineering compromises that are being made in the push to economy, and those changes expressly reduce the "design margin", in the bearings in particular...it's plain engineering fact.

Yes they are lasting longer...everyone's are, thick and thin alike...that they are lasting longer, and they are using thinner oils is not demonstrative that longer and thinner oils are linked in logic.

You have yet to prove that they would last longer than using thicker oils...or provide evidence that these thicker oils would produce "piles of failed engines".

I love these threads.Whether a consensus is formed does not make much difference to me,I love the viewpoints and logic that goes into the posts. We have some very intelligent people in this forum that I would never be fortunate enough to run across in my day to day life,and i try to absorb what I can Thank you for that gents.

I don't think anyone here can argue the idea of wanting our vehicles lasting longer. I get the idea of improved gas mileage, but at the end of the day, with the added cost of oil changes (5W conventional to 0W synthetic), where is the long term economical benefit?

Started the Jeep today,Delvac 15w40,it was 16 degrees outside. Sure thats not very cold, but its cold enough to thicken oil quite a bit. Didnt blow up.

The temp limit is to protect the engine, not because the oil is too viscous to operate the VVT.


It's a wonder engines lasted without this. Why is the oil temp sensor just upstream of the VVT solenoid?


Because it's a convenient location for a tap-off?

The benefit of synthetic 0Wxx over conventional 5Wxx is twice as long OCI. One example is Toyota used to recommend 5K OCI with 5W20 and now it is 10K with 0W20 for some vehicles.

10 quarts conventional 5W20 + 2 oil filters + 2 labors + 2 down times is more expensive than 5 quarts synthetic 0W20 + 1 oil filter + 1 labor + 1 down time.

Umm! The results of using light oil in engines where the design team originally specified that a 30 or 40 grade should be used are not likely to be known for some years by most owners, but the high approved oil consumption figures that are used to deny warranty claims make it obvious that manufacturers know the truth of long term light oil use.
Every engine is different in the way it responds to different oil grades and the useage or driver style also make a difference. Most of the light oil UOA data relates to VW engines as they reduced their spec from 40 to 30 some years ago and the VW TDI forum in Germany averaged out their UOA results to show that it was bad news, but the odd thing was that the cars that it was bad news for, were the ones owned by boy racers or high speed autobahn users who would have had higher cylinder head temperatures. Looking at individual UOA results proves nothing as the effects depend on the age of the engine, useage and driver style.
I am in contact every month with some of the ZF oil analysis geeks when I visit their R&D section and they are adamant that what is going on with oil specs as a result of CAFE is nuts, BUT the engines that suffer are most likely to be the non hybrid older block designs that are driven hard and are using cheaper 5/20's that shear to an even lower grade. It is most likely that combination that will suffer premature wear and the high oil consumption reports are confirming that even within the warranty period.
When you select an oil grade do remember that a cheap part synthetic 5w30 could well shear down to the same viscosity as a G4 full synthetic 0/20 by the end of the OCI, so if you want to move up a grade that has to be considered as you might need to stay with a full synthetic if you want to use a long OCI. The decision point for many engines in life expectancy terms is probably the oil consumption curve, if it starts to increase that is the time to think about moving to a 30 or even 40 grade.
Unfortunately the oil companies have to follow manufacturers recommendations, so the US versions of major brand oil finder pages are adding to the confusion, but if you check the UK or German oil finder web sites for the exact engine type you will see the truth and as a strong hint Liqui Moly have put a very specific label on their vehicle list for cars in the US. The Germans are world leaders in high tech oil development and when their geeks say something is a bad idea they are worth listening too.
I had to laugh recently because one fuel economy fan who was using 0/20 in a car that definitely needs 0 or 5w40 (It rattles when hot) said the car ran better after adding a can of snake oil thickner (It was an 80 grade oil plus some extra Zinc and Moly). He failed to understand that his hot rattle and oil consumption reduction was because he was in effect using a 40 grade oil.
