I'm going on a road trip soon, this will be the first one in my Mazda. How available is 0w-20 at truck stops on the interstates, in case I need to top off? I went out today to buy a couple quarts to bring along and was unable to find any at Autozone or Advance (they have it at the local Walmart so I'll get some there) but not finding it at the usual places concerned me a bit.

0w-20 is nonexistent at truck stops, you may get lucky to find some 5w-20.

OK, that's kind of what I figured. I assume a Mobil station would have some Mobil 1, but I'll get a few quarts to bring along anyway.

Those are independently franchised. They can sell whatever they want in there.

A few quarts is this a 30K trip.

You were joking about finding 0W-20 at truck stops, right?
Your car will probably not need any added oil on your trip, and it may never.
If it does, I assume that you'll be going to some destination, where you'll find Walmarts and AZs and AAPs, at least one of which will have M1 0W-20.
If you really needed to add oil, not just top it off to the full line on the dipstick, you could always use M1 0W-30, 5W-20 or even 5w30 in a pinch, since those might be easier to find than 0W-20.

Just top off with anything. If you need to top off more then a quart you have far bigger issues.

And a half a quart of anything mixed in is not an issue.

Just use 5w30 or something. You can find it anywhere.

Joking?... no, not totally. I don't expect to need to add any oil at all, but I don't believe in going unprepared either.

That would be OK, the name brands cost $9.50...

Do new Mazda's have an oil consumption problem? I've never carried oil with me, and even on 2,000+ mile trips never needed to add oil.

Even my 6 year old Hyundai and 6 year old Subaru don't need topped off between oil changes, and I wouldn't even consider bringing extra oil with me on an extended trip.

I agree. In a pinch a 5w30 will work just fine although 5W-20 is almost as commom today even for a complete oil change of that heavier grade, especially for a road trip which involves few cold starts.

I could drive ANY of my three vehicles (5.4 F-150, 3.0 Fusion, 1.6 Veloster) round trip from coast to coast and none would indicate any appreciable oil consumption on the dipstick, e.g. I never consume anything approaching a quart between 5K OCIs.

However, I do carry an emergency quart of oil in each vehicle in case of that once-in-a-million-mile contingency.

First new car?

No, but it is my first new car in a while, and my last new car (04 Accord with the 2.4) did use some oil.

My Buick needed a quart at pretty much every gas fill up for the last year I had it, so I'm still getting out of that mode I guess.

That's a pretty big assumption you have made there.
