any reason not to use amsoil series 3000 5w30 or ame 15w40 instead of using amsoil 0w40 in my sportsman 500? i was thinking 5w30 in winter and 15w40 in summer. whats the reasoning behind 0w40, other than being what polaris recommends?
thanks

Every manufacturer recommends an oil for some reason or another. Why not stick with what they recommend and use the Amsoil 0W40? A lot of Polaris owners use it with great results. Another good one is Mobil 1 0W40. Both are good synthetics and will satisfy Polaris' requirements.

The 15W40 will do nothing other than lower cold start protection and the 5W30 might be too thin at temperature. A 0W40 gives good cold start and hot film strength protection.

The 0w40 is price pointed in between the 2 you mentioned. You should have no problem running the 0w40 year round.

I believe that Polaris specs a 0w40 because of the wide varience of temps their equipment works in. Snowmobiles can be run well below freezing and boats (pwc) can be run in higher temps in the summer.

Stick with the 0w40 and you won't have to worry.
