03 Cavalier gauges

My grandmother has a 2003 Cavalier with something about 95k miles on it. When I talked to her last night, she told me that apparently her gauges have randomly stopped woring lately. They would either freeze where they are at, or would fall to the nearaest peg (even if it was the high peg). She said that the speedometer would fall way below 0 too. She hasn't taken it in to get looked at yet. Any ideas on what this is?

This is step one with every car problem. Every car has about 3 big issues and they've all been covered on other, more specific forums.

This is a GM thing. We had a truck at a park I did their IT work at that used to do it randomly. Was told it was common. Freaked me out when it happened when I was driving it.
