The sunroof in my '02 Cougar stopped working last week. It's stuck open slightly now. I'm guessing that the motor is bad, but I don't know for sure. I can get a used motor for about $100 and a whole used roof with motor for $300. The whole roof is a safer bet, but it could just be the motor, and that would be cheaper. Any advice or experiences to share?

Take off the motor cover and poke around to see what's going on. I'm sure you don't need the whole glass and channel apparatus.
While not 100% sure on Cougars, on Contours a weak gear that breaks is a common problem.

If it uses the same motor as the Ford Contour, the nylon gear on the motor has worn out. Check with one of the enthusiast forums for the "New Cougar" and see if the sunroof has a typical failure pattern.
