The first FL400 filter did not have the silicon ADBV and was simply a FL400. The same holds true for the FL820. After the upgrade to the silicon ADBV the S suffix was applied to make sure everyone knew the difference. If it always had the silicon ADBV there will be no S suffix.

I have a 26hp Briggs in a Craftsman GT5000 garden tractor. I use a good old Motorcraft FL400s. Equivalent is a Fram PH3600 and just a tad shorter is a Fram PH3614. Or you can cross reference to whatever brand you wish. For $3.00 or so the Motorcraft or it's Purolator cousin is just fine with me.

This is close but not completely true as my Explorer with the 5.0 V8 uses the same FL820S as my 5.4. To my knowledge they just did this in the last 2 or 3 years of the 5.0 production. Hated to see the little 5.0 production cease.
