In 1990 one could go to the dealership and drive away with a brand new YUGO for $4435...If they still made YUGO and YALLGO's(4-door) and design did not change but they met current EPA and safety requirements(i.e. airbags)...and they were still $4435...would you consider buying one?...I'll throw in a bonus...any color your cold/warm/black/gold heart desires...Heck I'll even throw in faux wool seat covers...for those in colder climes...

The link will be my brochure in case any one needs specs...by the way they are not as bad on the Interstate as one would think...Ready...Set...Post!...

Never buy. I would take free and if I only had to drive around an island like Nantucket.

I'd buy a Yugo for that price long before I threw money away on a Civic or Corolla which is basically the exact same car at 4x the cost.

I remember seeing a brand-new one on display in a shopping mall in the 1980's. It was dripping oil on the cardboard they had shoved under the engine compartment. If you could easily get parts and work on it yourself, I'd buy one.

We had a used one at our dealership. It was a year old with 44k. They sold it for $700, and counted themselves lucky.

One dealer here has a BO/GO on Yugos. Buy a new one and the 2nd one was "free"....likely a used model. lol. How much was the Renault Alliance, $3999 or so?

I don't think I would want to spend 4400 on that. I only spent 2,000 on my 1998 crown vic and I am sure the vic could stomp that thing like a bug. But for like 700, heck yes! Might be a fun little thing to tinker with. I would buy it today if it was available with the diesel for under 1000. It would make for a nice commuter car imo. Better mileage than a cop car thats for sure.

On a side note, I could see a huge market for lower cost(NOT cheap) cars here in the states. It used to be that you purchased a Honda or Toyota for a lower cost dependable car. Now even those are creepin higher in price.

Will be ever see a vehicle that retails for say 4-8K new? Probably not. But the Yugo was an interesting piece of history though.

My parents bought a brand-new Renault Encore in 1984. A totally basic 4spd manual model. With tax and all it was just under $8K IIRC. I recall Dad b-tching that was the most he had ever spent on a vehicle. That was a good little car though. He got a solid ~7yrs/130Kmi out of it & gave it away to a relative.

I agree that is why I started this post...A nice little cheap car like they make for Europeans would be Sweet!...Right now the Honda Fit is the car of my dreams!...I did see a brand new AVEO for $7995 but the last Daewoo I owned skeered me off for life...

I believe a dealer in my hometown had a similar deal, many years ago. If you bought a new truck or suburban, they'd throw in a new Yugo free.

And no, I don't think I'd buy one.

How much extra did you have to pay to get them to keep the Yugo?

Hyundai Accents get down close that range sometimes. Hyundai has come a long ways and you get a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty, 60,000 mile on the rest of the car.

I don't think the Accents are exactly flying out the doors, I see some real attractive prices for them occasionally.

Lets see, they each have a engine, 4 wheels and gas tank.

Your correct. No difference.

Did I mention I was gonna throw in sheep skin seat covers...also since it was brought to my attention that these runabouts leak like a dropped watermelon...a free bottle of Auto-RX...and I will deliver the car with Maxlife in the crankcase...10w40...5w30 for Canucks...

You're right; the Yugo will break down a lot sooner and put you out of your small, noisy car misery long before the Corolla or Civic give you a chance to realize you're driving around in a Euro-sized box in America.
