Curious which interior paint people here have had good experiences with. I never really thought about it and just used Behr Premium Plus from HD, but recently tried Sherwin Williams Duration since it didn't cost much more when on sale. The SW paint did seem to have better coverage, especially as I went light grey over brown, but does it matter when you need two coats anyway? I opted for a matte finish and it surprisingly looks a lot better than the usual eggshell finish - more consistent and does a better job of hiding imperfections.

A better quality roller did make a big difference. A Purdy Marathon polyester roller held a lot of paint and left a very nice finish. I also tried a Purdy XL nylon brush but didn't really notice a difference with it as I'm an amateur painter at best.

Nothing Behr makes comes close to Ben Moore or Sherwin Williams. I’ve used a lot of SW Super Paint over the years but for bathrooms Duration is a better choice. Their Promar Ceiling paint is really good as well.

We have used Behr for years in all the houses we owned. When we decided to hire the most recent interior painting last year the contractor used SW. I couldn't tell a difference between the 2 brands, but I didn't paint it either. My go to is Behr at HD.

Just my $0.02

Ever since my daughter worked for a summer at a Sherwin Williams, the store manager has let me use her employee discount. So I've been using Sherwin Williams Emerald for the walls and Duration for trim. I love the way they roll and brush on, and the coverage is very nice.

I don't know what I'll do if they ever cancel my daughter's employee account.

Sherwin Williams paint does not like Command strips. They hold long enough to hang something fragile and walk away then let it drop.

If the wall was primed correctly they don't drink paint as bad so you can get by with the cheaper stuff.

Benjamin Moore. The main walls in my home interior are painted with BM Ultra Spec 500 low sheen eggshell. That sounds odd but BM makes eggshell and low sheen eggshell in that line. The paint looks great despite it being a contractor paint. The one time I had to clean a spot near a wall switch I used Krud Kutter and it come out spotless with no marring or sheen change.

We have used Benjamin Moore in the last 2 houses we have lived in and won't use anything else based upon our experiences. It is a bit more expensive but well worth it for ease of application and long term wear. We have a friend who is a professional painter, both residential and commercial, and it is the only paint she will use. We started using BM upon her recommendation over 20 years ago.

My favorite interior paint is SW Cashmere. It flows so nicely, covers evenly and dries to a nice smooth finish. Found out it is quite washable too. I can't say anything bad about SW Duration though. Used a lot of that too. The only problem with SW is trying to figure out their sheen system. Every paint line has their own description rather than the standard flat, eggshell, satin, etc. On the plus side SW occasionally runs a 30% off sales from time to time.

Can't go wrong with Purdy rollers and brushes either.

Is Consumer Reports out to lunch? I'm not sure if my experiences are consistent with their results:

Pittsburg is easy one of the best paints out there,go to their upper lines as ppg permanizer, (exterior ) or the speed hide (interior),once you try ppg you will use nothing else. Menards sells the Pittsburg Paramount as their top of the line paint.

Glidden from Home Depo or Valspar from Lowe’s (decades back it was Dutch Boy)

I get the middle tier ($20/25 ish)of either being I am typically in newer homes I actually prefer the more fluid thin feel (lack of better word) of less expensive paint.

For me they provide a more smooth finish than more heavy premium paint and all I know it’s better than what production builders use on homes and we have always been happy with that too.

I guess the premium expensive stuff is overkill for us and to be clear I just like the smooth surface I feel I can get with them.
I see based on the chart above most all the paints are equal unless your one to dirty the walls.
Look at the low rated Glidden for $25 rated much the same as the expensive ones, since we don’t mark up our walls and stain them no worries and it provides a sweet smooth finish.

Ps the profit margin in paint is massive

Agreed.

Emerald rolls on amazing. Imperfections vanish in drying.

They used to do deep paint sales , 40-50% off, a few times a year. IMO, worth it at full price, extra worth it at half price.

I recently just painted a large room using the KILZ Tribute paint + primer line for the 1st time & was very happy with the outcome.
