WRX Opinions

Biased Subaru owner here.
What's the competition? I tried to think about this before responding. Let's forget about the All Wheel Drive(awd) for now. Golf GTI, Mustang GT, Civic Type R are priced higher. Civic Si can be had for less than a WRX, but you get less even though we're ignoring the awd feature. The WRX has a twin scroll turbo and maximum torque(258 lb/ft) is achieved at 2,000 r.p.m. Plus, I have to mention that driving a manual transmission in your twenties is hardly a chore, and is certainly a skill that one can use years later whilst shopping for vintage cars since manual transmission cars are living on borrowed time.
I've owned 5 Subarus and they were all reliable and never left me stranded. There are hundreds of other models of cars from various manufacturers that have millions of owners who can claim the same thing. I know, just offering my opinion and experience.
A reliable SUV is a good idea, but they are not necessarily cheaper to purchase, maintain, or insure. People carriers are inevitable for most, why start early? Have some fun while the reflexes and eyesight are excellent.
What was the question again?

This. Buy a vette, viper, exige, etc. Wrx is a 4 door. I owned 2 door sports coupes until 2014 or so when I decided to buy land and a house and things that make an SUV more sensible for a 1 vehicle household.

Agreed, but 200whp/240tq isnt "some power" in a 3400# vehicle unless its 1989. Audi Rs3 is the floor in 2020 for awd and a fun car for a young man just graduating, re:power/weight.
For a kid just out of school, a WRX is a nice quick car on in 1989 or 2020, Some simple software and it's making more. Yes, an Audi RS3 is certainly much faster but also costs $60K.

2 door coupes? That's for old dudes who wear jorts and white New Balance shoes.

Right, but dude can afford something much spicier. No amount if sensible mods will make a wrx hang with even a 20 year old camaro.

My Golf station wagon will smack a 20 year old Camaro around...come on now. That WRX has it in it, just needs to be coaxed out. But yes, there are spicier options for the same money.

You run 12s?

I mean, you do have to account that the wrx and z28 (1998) weigh within a hundo or so of each other, and the z28 puts to the pavement what a 2020 WRX Sti is advertised at the CRANK...

Also, golf =/= wrx just because they are both turbo 4 bangers.

The wrx is good for maybe 260-280whp before you tear the motor out and really start doing in depth stuff, or risk it going high order.

Bah! I guess I'm old before my time then. Sure am jaded enough for it, lol! Bought my vette when I was 26.
Yes. Here you go. Bonus, I don't have to drive a '98 Z28 (who does that?) and can carry stuff.

Would be interesting to see how close that app is to an actual track. Have you gone to one?
It's dead-nuts on, taken it to the drag track several times running my Dragy and the times are v. close/less than a tenth difference. I had a comparo table at one point. Dragy is a super-accurate GPS receiver. This should not be confused with Torque Pro and other apps that use your phone and are not nearly as accurate. Also, as always with performance data, so many variables. That day was my best and it was 1) cold 2)~200 msl 3) running an E30 blend and 4) at a complete weight of ~3400 pounds including me - total daily weight is ~3600 pounds so I had removed all I could within reason/1/8 tank of fuel etc. Basically best possible time. My average over ~30 runs is ~12.7/106 which would a better overall number to use. My 60' time best is 1.88 but usually about 1.95 - the DSG with awd and launch control is key. Really impressive for a car that cost ~$19K new (before TTL) with about $5K of mods to get it that way.

Agreed! That's excellent. I was curious to see how well it stacked up in your experience, hence my query. Glad to hear it matches what I've read, which is that it is extremely accurate and offers very comparable data to an actual track.

I'll post the comparison if I can find it if you are interested. That day I was running 12.9s/104s b/c my car was so heat-soaked from waiting so long in the line between runs. I plan on hitting our local 1/8 mile no-prep grudge races soon, fun to beat up on folks in a base-model VW grocery getter...hahahahaha

Here you go! V. close. The variance is likely due to where the car sat w/r to the staging lights as there is some small amount of wiggle room there. Either way, v. close/good enough! So for this limited dataset, a little quicker ET/slower trap.
