The black "stuff" is adhesive plastisol. There's many types and formulas available. As for Champions adhesive, I'd venture a guess at either epoxy or a hot melt type. Now, before you jump on the HOT MELT!?!?!?! wagon, it ain't the same stuff that's in your wifes scrapbooking tool kit.

I would only take their top line filter, if applicable. In some cases I have found OEM filters (the cartridge type) just repackaged in Fram boxes, which would be fine.
