Is German Castrol Syntec able to withstand the rigors of a track day or autocrossing? With AutoZone's amazing $29.99 deal right now I am so very tempted to just grab some bottles and use it instead of my expensive Motul 300V.
As a primarily PAO group IV oil with a pedegree as long a 8 year olds Christmas list, I wouldn't hesitate to use it for tracking. The other oil most comparable to it, M1 0w40, is used in many race cars during races. Notably 24 hour LeMans races that are probably brutal on oil straight off the shelf. So I would use either of these oils to race or track in my car without hesitation.
I would see no problem running the syntec 5w40 in the audi for race use. Motul is king I understand that but if your running stock HP level along with a stock engine it is not nessasary. Motul is used when high oil temps are seen like a 24 hr race or even a 2 hr race. Your 1/2 hr wheel to wheel races is nothing a good over the counter oil cant handle.
If your concerned about it have a oil temp gauge installed its a good piece of mind on a road race car to have one.
I was just going by some pics shown here on bitog awhile back where a member watched them put the oil in the car and throw the container into the trash, he then went and looked and it was just off the shelf 0w40 Euro forumula.
tig, a member here, mentioned in a recent thread here they were seen using regular old M1 5w30 as well.
Someone still have the links to these pics? I know more than just me seen or remembers that thread.
Hi,
Dan - I can assure you that the "off the shelf" M1 0W-40 is used by many Manufacturers as their "prime" race oil - MB, Porsche and Aston Martin to name just three
To the OP. I would use the lubricanst you nominate for "light race use" if it is a prescribed viscosity and the "race" is of short duration

I think speculation is a better word.
I was going to post the links but others beat me to it. Mobil 1 0w-40 -- the exact same stuff you and I can buy -- is used fairly often in racing.
It's not the only street oil like that, either. The same is true of Castrol Syntec 5w-50 (BMW PTG), Castrol TWS 10w-60 (various teams), and Fuchs Titan GT1 (some Porsches).
