Would you buy a hybrid?

Yep. Wife is getting a Hybrid CRV for her next ride and I'm waiting to see if Ford (Or another big 3) brings the Ranger hybrid here (or some other manuf with a hybrid that includes a 120v 'generator'). Main reason is I really want the Pro-Power On board for pulling the travel trailer. If they don't bring the Ranger, I'll pick up an F150, although I don't want something that big, the convenience outweighs the size.

My Maverick hybird was cheaper than ICE. It doubles the mpg of my F-150. So far has saved me about $1500 in fuel. 40.5 vs 21.7 for the F-150l. I love the world need for instant gratification. It just kills me. I doubt if you really would drive one even if it saved you a bundle.
That's a great thing but if you compare the exact type of vehicle non hybrid how much more MPGs are we talking vs the cost of a hybrid is the question we are asking. My thoughts are if a car in ICE form gets, say, 22 city/30 hwy and the hybrid same model gets say 30/35 - thats not enough for me to bite and have a more complex drivetrain and costs down the road. I travel 80% highway and a hybrid makes no sense for me....but if I was mostly city driving then it may make the case more for the hybrid. It just comes down to what use a person has and what they like. I will say I like a hybrid any day over a full EV. Oh and congrats on the Maverick - they did a nice job with that vehicle.

Atkinson cycle gas motor still provides benefits on the highway. Also, depending on the brand, the two powertrains work in parallel - even on the highway.

Yes true, I am aware of that but I didn't realize how much more efficient these have become since my involvement in GM Hybrid full sizes from early 2000s. A lot has come I see. Thank you for that.

I used to have conversations like this with my pops. I always had to ask him how many decades old something needed to be before he stopped calling it new.

Lived with an 04 RX400H for a bit over a decade.

I'd rate that car an 8/10, and the service I got from my dealer as a 10/10.

Some stuff if was way better than ice, and others just equal.

My Lexus writer Tim at Santa Monica Lexus knows how to get and service a client.

You might be confusing hybrids with EVs. When it comes to driving one, there's zero difference in driving a gas vehicle.

There's some stuff on the margins. Most notably would be that most newer hybrid powertrains will run on electric only at some times. As well as dealing with regenerative braking.

I remember that the first generation Honda hybrids always had the ICE running with the electric motor providing supplemental power.

Well, I just traded my 2022 Corolla Cross in one month ago.

I now drive a 2024 Corolla Cross Hybrid.

There were several factors.
--Trade in value at ~ 140k miles.
--Need to disperse retirement funds.
--Hybrid version came to market.

LOL I used to have a 2019 Lexus UX 250h, traded in at ~ 150k miles.

I now have 300k miles of experience with this drivetrain.

BITOG still tells me I am using incorrect oil.

I migrated from HPL HDEO 0W16/12K mile OCI initially, to HPL PP 0W8/30k mile OCI ultimately.

This predominantly business decision to get a Hybrid again leaves me having zero second thoughts...I love it.

Yes I did buy one. I like to save money. When my VW TDI that got 45+ mpgs was totalled I was looking at a VW Jetta gas at around 40 mpgs and a Toyota Prius at 60 mpgs. Toyota Prius won. I have owned it for 1.5 years now and I have averages 65 mpgs over the 25k miles I have owned. Couldn't be happier.

It is different though. If you want instant power, or you want to race the car next to you, this is not for you. But if you want a reliable car that gets you around on a few drops of fuel, this is it. I'm amazed how they can squeeze so many miles from a gallon of gas. My 650 cc motorcycle burns more fuel that this car.

Of course. I have a 50-mile roundtrip commute each day I'm teaching. Hybrid would be good. It's 98% highway at 75mph.

Yes , always loved the driveline as it avoids turbo with slight lag and gives torque instantly off the line not requiring revs.

Also not a dork mobile any longer where cars like Prius and even Honda looked just weird or ugly to be shout out I am a hybrid.

We have a '24 Toyota Grand Highlander and when it switches to EV, only thing you notice is it gets a LOT quieter. I've never "felt" the regenerative braking. They don't behave like Teslas do in that regard.

Several neighbors have various versions of the Toyota Prius, and they have a noticeable "thunk" sound.

I just have no interest in hybrids. If someone did something interesting performance wise with a twin clutch in a small car that didn't cost millions I might find it interesting. It just tends to numb fun driving and the only ones that don't are supercars.

I'm really only want an EV or full ICE. I get that hybrids have been really reliable, I just am not interested in the complexity of both.

Nope. Pure ICE or Pure EV for me.

Messy packaging/complexity. Even some brand new Toyota Hybrids are a packaging disaster. Huge compromises in interior space.

24 years after the initial Prius release and we are still hearing about this newfangled/scary technology. I always love seeing the myths that just simply will not die. $10K extra! 10-25 year ROI! $20K battery that needs to be replaced at 150k! Hybrids do worse on highway than their ICE counterparts! Hybrids are more complex so there for unreliable! The battery takes up the entire trunk! Etc. Never gets old.

Enjoy your arm workout gents, looks a bit cloudy out today.
