Would you buy a hybrid?

I would consider a hybrid car. I will say that VW 4 cylinder TSI engines are very fuel efficient.
Surprisingly too considering how stout they are. I luckily didn't lose any of that efficiency after tuning. I'm sure they'll have to go hybrid to beat it and that would make for a very powerful vehicle with the EA888. I don't know that they have made hybrids with that powertrain, but if they haven't they should.

I own a Toyota RAV4 hybrid and I am very, very happy with it. I did consider a Prius 15 years ago, but I'm glad I didn't back then. Toyota has refined the hybrid segment. I would say they make the best.

After considering that I don't do much in town driving, the extra taxes I have to pay for one yearly and the added up front cost I am probably better off with ICE. I am getting close to 30 mpg which is not as good as a hybrid but is not bad either.

That's what I don't like, some places have hybrids paying nearly the same cost in road tax as an EV. That seems like an unfair penalty since they're still buying gas.

Life isnt fair, it's what we vote for. I dont think its fair my tax dollars supplement the purchase of these vehicles ;)
Actually its insane, looked at another way, Tesla is getting $7,500 from the taxpayers for the cars they are selling.

We have an '07 Prius that keeps ticking along. A mechanic who specializes in hybrids said that generation was the sweet spot for Prius. Later ones had problems with head gaskets and EGR.

For sure, but that road tax is depending on the vehicle is enough reason that I would not buy the hybrid in some cases and would just go with a pure ICE vehicle or go straight to the EV. I don't want to pay an additional $200 a year and also still buy fuel.

Kind of funny to think that a McLaren P1 would pay an additional road fee. 🤣

Any other manufacturer can make cars that qualify for this credit too just like not all Teslas regardless of the buyer's income qualify for the credit. There are cars made in excess of the price to qualify or ones that materials don't meet the requirement for US manufacture to be eligible. This isn't in support of the credit, but Tesla isn't doing anything special that any other manufacturer couldn't also do.

Yeah, I find it disingenuous or short sighted when people point out one tax expenditure but ignore others.

Remember the Troubled Asset Relief Program, or TARP? Some $426 billion in taxpayer money would soon be lent or directly invested in major banks and corporations.
About 20 percent of the total TARP funds — $80 billion — went to bail out General Motors and Chrysler. Chrysler emerged as a newly merged company with Italian-based Fiat. Ford did not ask for a government bailout, but received other financial assistance. Ford supported the GM and Chrysler bailouts to protect its supply chain and dealer network.

Then there is that pocket change we send to patrol the Strait of Hormuz...

I didnt mean to imply that they were, unintentional just using Tesla's name. Im sure you know if we ever bought an EV I certainly would make sure my fellow taxpayers pay me to buy an EV too!

Heck I almost convinced myself to buy a new one this week and you better believe I was ready to collect that credit.

Every time I look at one I still keep thinking about it.

One sample point of an orphaned car: Prius V. I get 40mpg all day on economy mode. Maybe not the most efficient hybrid out there but consider it comfortably seat 4 with a huge hatch / trunk, and I got it at 5k below MSRP new (that was 27k MSPR, 22k before tax back in 2014/15), it was a great deal.

Too bad 2 of the most mentioned hybrids, Prius & Maverick, can’t be had here anytime soon even at full MSRP
Accord and Camry hybrids appear to be in good supply and either would make a good and cheap to run sedan for everyday use as well as long trips.
