Worst oil filter Ive ever seen

Cleaning is not evil but I think most people here prefer a slower clean then using a flush for quick clean and risk clogging up some important passages in the motor.

Me I'm all for slow cleaning as long as the motor will survive with the gunk inside while the cleaning is going on. I've never had to de-gunk a motor in my life probably never will as the first thing I look at is the dipstick and under the oil cap then go for a test drive when purchasing vehicles.

It was a 2003 Volvo S80 T6. Looking at the filter now I can see it has an early 2010 date, so maybe it was only in there for 20k or so haha.

Audios - I might have missed it, but how many total miles are on this sludged up Volvo?

Wow that filter is amazing. I bet the dealer advertises 100 point inspections blah blah blah on all their new cars too. Are they in your area? Have a good/bad rep?

Also...I love how everyone is a mechanic on the internet!

This is a good plan or at LEAST change the filter within 500mi.

The car just rolled 101k when we got it. She got it from a highway used car dealer, not a Volvo dealer. They told her they went over it, of course.

Touched it up a bit.

It pays to have a car inspected by someone knowledgeable if possible. I've seen too many people I know get burned by not looking them over well.

Tell me about it. The other day we had someone bring in an Audi A3 2.0t. Left with a 4300 estimate of maintenance and repairs Radiator leak was especially expensive. We even offer the first inspection free!!

Curious what it needed that would amount to that much. The infamous hpfp + cam + cam follower?

I've read the whole thread, and I think you did well by this customer.
The flush approach is the least costly alternative that might save this engine, and since you run a shop, you have certainly seen this sort of thing before.
Hardly your fault that the customer bought this seriously neglected car.
You can only try to save it.
It would probably be more cost effective to try to save the engine as you are and then replace it with a good used unit if needed than to do the amount of work required by this one if the flush and oil change approach fails.
She was probably seduced by the low miles and seemingly nice condition.
Too bad she didn't bring the car to you before she bought it.
That is one nasty looking filter, and I can imagine what the tar looked and smelled like as it drained out.

SOrry meant A4, heres what we found. Timing belt/water pump/major service. probable 2 rear wheel bearings, rear pads and rotors, front pads and rotors (car sat, starting to rot), radiator leaking, both front upper front control arm bushings shot, passenger side front upper rear arm balljoint shot, recommended a whole control arm kit. Alignment, 2 front tires. Yea, bad one.
The oil was muddy brown for a few seconds at first then turned a deep deep black. She actually stopped in friday afternoon for a check engine light, turned out to be a fuel cap not even put back on. M1 was still amber, although was darkening. At 750 miles already since oil change. Promises shell be in at 3k. Promised.

I've seen much worse than that

I do not like the quick flushes as they can leave dislodged particles in the bearings or other critical parts. I prefer to use a CI-4 10w30 in sludged cases, having the customer come back in 3 to 5 days to check. Then after getting it reasonable, an AutoRx treatment.

Although with the sodium sulfonate detergent in the SN oils, it might be as good a solution.

Beat me too it! But I would like to see the condition of the replacement filter.

You did fine by the customer. Identified all of the issues with her car and did exactly what I would do with the engine. Since it is running I would not do a tear down as in the video. I would simply advise her of a plan to clean the engine over time. The only thing I might do different is use Pennzoil Platinum. I might also consider an oversize oil filter but would have her back every 3000 miles for oil changes over the next 30k. Then go to 5000.

Its good to see you care about the customer's car. You could've just thrown some oil in it and sent her on her way. Kudos to you for doing the right thing.

+1 Don't listen to the haters. Nice job. But I'd still want to change the M1 out before 1000 miles.
