Had a quick lube place dip into the power steering and wiped a rag, in which he showed me the rag and told me my transmission fluid needed to be flushed.

It must have been one of those magic rags with integrated test strips and fluid teleporting capabilities.

Corvette you Are being very presumptuous by saying what you said. You don't know any of the details of our convo, apparently you have had some untrustworthy mechanics on your day which leads you to thoughts like this. I emailed her a 4 paragraph explanation on what's going on and how this may not help much. Would you have just dumped the oil and warned her that it's sludges? Besides the fact that she spend over 1000 on other items and she's had the car very shortly. I recommended dumping it back to the dealer but she wanted to keep it. She also didn't have any type of warranty. I never would've thought id get flamed and myprofessional experience would be questioned by posting an oil filter picture.

eh, its a volvo s80, no big loss.

I agree and don't think you should of been, seems some conclusions were jumped to.

Audios; You can never win on the internet. You got flamed for doing the best you can for somebody within their means, and you would have got it just as bad if you would have turned her away and told her to go to a dealer. You just can't win.

Youre right Corvette, the twin turbo Volvo is exactly like that 4 cylinder Honda theyre tearing apart in those vids. Its a piece of cake to set the the variable valve timing on the cams, not to mention the timing belt removal. And oh yeah, the subframe has to come down to drop the pan, only 7 hours labor. So why not try to sell the 12 hour labor job right away instead of a 150 or so flush and oil change to try and possibly save the motor. Might as well send the turbos out too while were at it no? Im re-evaluating my whole business model, Ill call you next time i need advice on how to run a shop.

Ill post up some pics when she comes back for the next change, well see how it looks. Sticker shows 3k on the windshield.

Better yet, why not diagnose the best fix to a sludge issue of unknown proportions based on the state of the oil filter and then assume that the flush worked so well that she needn't do anything except hopefully come back after driving 3k.

And don't forget the importance of your business model rather than what's best for the customer.

I'd try to get a hold of that car in the next 500 miles to do another Oil change interval.

Although Mobil 1 10w40 is awesome in cleaning and robustness, I too worry about inundating that filter will all kinds of crud, then having something clog a critical passage.

I think the idea here would be to change out the filter early, and from the sounds of it, that's the OP plan. A 3K OCI on M1 0w40 is very short.

Gievn how sludged the engine was, even considering the flush, the 0w40 has to come out again in short order. Probably 3 oil changes with expandingintervals of 300, 500, 1000 miles. Wonder if the turbo oiler has screens. Thats the first to expitr this week.

Guess I am curious about the filter that was pulled out. It almost looks like a Mahle. I know I have had their filters, I believe air filters which are made in Poland. Seemed fine to me when I used them as far as quality goes...Or maybe a Hengst...?

No it wasnt a Mahle Mann or Hengst, I think theyre the cheaper filters weve been seeing mostly from quickie lubes that actually stock the cartridge filter and change it, as opposed to just leaving it in. I believe the brand name is OEM, or OE, but its all chinese not good quality. Possibly even a napa white box, havent ordered one for the inserts when the good ones are easily available.

that must of been in bypass for ages. Filthy.

Flushes can work, in extreme cases they can accelerate the inevitable.

I would do a couple short intervals as mentioned above.

Too bad she didn't have someone check the car out for her at the dealership before she bought it. Just a simple look down the oil filer hole with a flash light would have raised a big red flag.

Yes, thats one ugly looking filter.
I'd do a quart of MMO and then conventional 5w30 for a couple thousand miles. Drain, and do it one more time. The car will be fine. Its a volvo.

Its been awhile since I owned a volvo.......I totally forgot about the flame trap and oil seperator.
Just buy a new one and be done with it. I bet its shot.

Dang... I am not one to hate on motor flushes, it's on a case by case basis.... Usually, we will put a can of Gunk flush before a normal OCI... once every few years. It's not a huge nasty undertaking, and again, the motor I'm dealing with are usually not filth ridden..

Not so long ago I had the valve cover off of my work car when I put a timing belt on... it was absolutely spotless. I was really amazed at how clean it was.

I will say, that at a normal OCI for us, the oil coming out is a very dark amber, but light can be seen though the stream. Pour in a little flush, and that dump out definately took some more dirt with it.

With any mishandled motor, it's always... try, and hope for the best.

There's always two crowds here... the "Engine Cleaning Is Part of Maintenence"... and "Engine Cleaning Is Evil".....
