Women that do oil changes.

I insisted on my daughter learning the basics. She kept protesting she wasn't a women's libber. Still one day as she was finishing changing a tire, when a guy stopped. He didn't plan to help her, he was hoping she had a jack that worked he could use.

This past Dec my daughter, 21 wanted to learn the basics in preparation for the future so changed the oil, filter, tranny fluid, wipers, air filter passenger filter, checked air pressure, battery waer level etc. . Did a pretty good job.

Will she do it again, don't know but at least she has some concept of what needs to be done.

I do the oil changes as well as repair stuff around the house. My husband was raised to study and go to school forever, whereas I was hanging out in the garage with my dad while growing up. I will be the one to teach my boys the technical stuff while my husband teaches the organic chemistry. Now, if I could just get my husband to do the dishes while I'm out in the garage replacing the fuel filter!

My exgirlfriend, a speech therapist in college changed her own in the school parking lot once a semester.

I've shown a few women how to change their oil just because I think everyone should at least know how.

Would my wife do it if I were out of town for a month. Um, no!

She called a pipe wrench a "thingy" last weekend if that is any indication of her mechanical aptitude.

My sister does practically all of her own vehicle maintenance,,,, and she's single

I have made certain that my wife knows how to change a flat tire in the dark,,,,, just in case she is put in that situation.

My wife could learn, but that is why I'm around. If she can do everything without me, then why does she need me?

On the other hand, she does know enough to buy my tools from the Snap-On guy. Even though when she started I asked why? (The answer is that it supports a local guy rather than a conglomerate like Sears.)

Cheers, Doug

Hey guys, like the song, "you're looking for love in the all the wrong places."

You need to go to Iowa (wife) or Michigan (former girlfriend).

Former girlfriend helped me rebuild a '48 Plymouth engine.

Wife wife is from Iowa and can rebuild anything that moves. She used to help her dad rebuild engines and manual trannys. When I saw oil and grease on her hands, I knew I was in love.

[Of course, seeing a 5'10" strawberry blonde in a set of coveralls didn't hurt either!!!!]

I usually do the heavy stuff now that she is currently in the medical field and must have maximum dexterity and clean hands. Well, no grease, but will change oil.

When formulating new fluids, we usually both go for a test drive to determine "shift" and "feel."

I had a poor gal once seriously ask me to teach her how to change oil. When the appropriate time came, she balked for some cheap reason.

Unless a gal is willing to crawl under a car, get dirty, and scrape a knuckle or two, she can never be taught to change the oil.

How about the wives or girlfriends coming into the garage and telling guys like us on this board, "why don't you take it to a REAL mechanic". Can anything be more insulting?

As a general rule I don't see very many women willing to work on cars and trucks. In fact, nowadays you will not see a lot of men too knowledgeable around a car.

But one thing I have noticed-the few women who are auto mechanics are usually very, very good. I can think of at least two women mechanics that I would rather have working on my car then the majority of men mechanics. In may be the rare woman who becomes a mechanic, but the few that do are usually some of the best that there are. And they tend to be more honest then a man, also.

That's why it's so hard to find girlfriends for those of us who like their cars enough to take them to "real" mechanics as seldom as possible in order to avoid possible cheating or negligence.

Anybody in DFW, while we're at it? Since I've already got a husband, wouldn't mind some female friends now. (Can't stand talking about clothes and babies all the time).

Same here.

The main reason I hang out here at BITOG is talk to anyone, male or female, with a bit of technically savvy and some real scientific knowledge.

I find it disgusting when I am stuck with a bunch of men talking about clothes. I think I would rather talk about the babies. Of course, I might not want to hear their ignorance about cars.

Now to be fair, how many of us rugged types volunteer to do the dishes and feed the washer and dryer?

my sister refuses to change her oil, yet she also refuses to take it to a oil change place as she does not want them to mess up. so what does she do? elect me to drain her oil and change the filter, and she gets to add the oil!
she does know how to change a spare, and add washer fluid, brake fluid, check tire pressure and all that.

but she has filled a gas car with diesel, and a diesel car with gas!

ok i have to add to this. i have a friend who refuses to do dishes. he buys his food pre made and pre heated and uses disposable utensils plates and cups.
he does no cooking, and he does no dishes.

Yeah, this guy my folks know just married this woman who rebuilds/collects classic muscle cars as a hobby... needless to say, she KNOWS how to change the oil!
