Woman killed by bullet fired to stop Grizzly Bear

If I lived someplace like that where bears could attack, I'd have a 44 magnum on my hip at all times. They were caught off guard and he wasn't totally prepared for this attack. Sad it ended the way it did.

That's a sad story. The bears are a problem down here in Florida due to all the animal loving freaks down here. They just had the first sanctioned bear hunt in decades and killed the 350 bear limit by day two. The animal groups are livid of course. Bears do not belong down here in subdivisions. I am actually surprised the couple wasnt better prepared for such a attack. You would think they would have a better plan living in the wilderness with bears than to run and wait in the cars.

Black Bears are usually afraid of humans unless they're starving, or have cubs nearby...
Grizzly Bears are a very different animal, and I have no experience with them, only what I've read.

+1

My brother lives in AK; we went hiking and carried something significantly substantial.

Note to fisherman: if you know where the good fishing spots are, so do the bears.

You also need special ammo. Just standard .44MAG rounds aren't enough. Even something like a .50 Desert Eagle isn't.

A friend went to AK fishing and brought a .44 with him for protection. A local asked him what he had for ammo and when he told him shook his head and told him it would be useless. He then gave him some of his own reloads with special bullets that were souped up as well.

A charging Grizzly really only presents the head as a viable target and their skull is so thick a regular .44 or even .50 won't drop them( stun them at best ). Has to be special rounds to penetrate the skull and drop the bear.

I will ask my friend when I see him next, if I can remember, exactly what they did to make the rounds effective.

That poor, poor man. He must feel so terribly awful. What a tragedy.

The woman was a pretty thing as well. Not that looks matter...but what a story.

A bullet fragment, gone through a branch?
I think it was a close call what killed her.

By the way, it appears even one bullet was enough to take the bear's mind off the attack. Does one really need a one shot one kill load, that probably penetrates everything around if you miss?

Terrible event, sometimes things just happen.
Sorry for the families.

I ve heard that about a grizzly and .44 magnum and don't believe it. You hit anything in the head with a .44 magnum and there is chunks flying and it is dead. A .357 magnum in the skull as well. I've seen the special 310 grain .44 magnum grizzly bear loads and they would do " better" if you hit it in the body but any .44 magnum factory 240 grain bullet to any skull is going to penetrate and kill a bear.

[/quote I don't think you could give me a big enough Gun if I was going to fighting a grizzley. I would start at a 30-06 up to a grenade launcher.

He was in a lose-lose situation, Don't shoot enough , she dies, shoot and hit her she dies. He did what he could in those circumstances. Getting a head shot on an attacking bear could not be easy, plus imagine the stress of it attacking your wife. It is probably better than being mauled but none the less sad.

Agreed I would have a 300 win mag.

Even Clint Eastwood said shooting the .44 Magnum revolver hurt

Hard cast flat nose unjacketed is generally the go to handgun bullet type for large predators of the four legged variety.

Hardcast is the choice. Hollow-points are for Hollywood
