Wix vs. Tough Guard for Hyundai

It looks like I will be inheriting a 2003 Hyundai Elantra. I changed the oil in it recently, and used a Napa Gold filter. The regular price for this filter at NAPA is $7.99. The regular price of a Wix branded filter (51334) at O'Reilly is $7.99 also. Interestingly, the Fram Extra Guard PH9688 is also $7.99 at O'Reilly. I can get the TG9688 at Walmart for $6.94.

Is one significantly better than the other? The reason I'm asking about these particular filters is that they are readily available locally.

I already know the difference in end caps, and it's not important to me. I'm willing to settle for metal end caps if I have to.

No, there is not a significant difference in filtering efficiency or quality between the Wix/Napa Gold and the Fram TG. Both are solid filters that can easily do 10k OCI's

The Fram Ultra is a great filter as well if you either plan on longer than 10k OCI's or plan on doing a couple oil changes per filter change (up to 15k total miles). In this case it would be $4 per oil change for the filter...best price so far.

All good choices. It's a win-win, no matter which you choose.

Both great filters just get which ever one is easier to purchase for you. And also I belive the Napa isn't as good efficiency but very close. Can't go wrong with either though.

The TG or Ultra is the best buy IMO. The WIX is made in Mexico. The MicroGard/ Napa Silver equivalent isn't though.

I prefer the construction of the Wix/Napa Gold, plus the Wix/NG has Wix's traditional metal thread end bypass. Not that the latter is a biggie, but a nice option.

That and I get the NG 1334 on the twice yearly NG sale for ~$3.60.

That said, either will work over an average oci/fci.

Below is an NG1334 run ~5700mi. on a Civic.

You may want to investigate the quality of OEM Hyundai oil filters. The genuine Hyundai oil filters can be bought for about $6.00 at the dealer or, if a dealer is not close by, purchased on ebay in multiple units for about $5.00 each shipped to your door.

Unless there is a know issue with OEM filters and the price is competitive, I vote for an Hyundai OEM filter.

Both are excellent filters. I have only actually personally used the Tough Guard in that size and it works great on our daughter's KIA.

I like the idea of using the Fram Ultra for 2 OC's.

RockAuto has OEM filters sold under the Auto7 name for $3.02. That is precisely what I'd buy and use.

I'd go with Wix, but as someone else said, the Ultra is only $1 more.

Napa also has the Platinum (Wix XP) on sale for $9.99 this month, but occasionally they go on sale for $7.99

Many Hyundai cars have a tick when using a non Hyundai filters.

I experienced it myself. Some replacement filters were ok and some would cause a tick. Just changing the filter and not the oil would make the tick stop.

If you look around there is a Hyundai TSB on the subject.

Take a look at a Hyundai filter. The gasket is an O ring and the can itself is made of thicker than normal metal.
