I hear this "group" ranking for oil filters (I guess it would be similar to that of how synthetics and blends are ranked?) well, I was looking online for some oil filters for my Optima and came up with the following:

http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php?carcode=1442458&parttype=5340

PRONTO Part # PO4459 {#PG4457} $1.68
PRO-TEC Part # 152 {ProTec Spin-On Lube Filter} $1.82
BOSCH Part # 3312 {Premium} $3.90
ACDELCO Part # PF1127 {DURAGUARD; replaces PF1230; DURAGUARD #25161877, PF1230} FILTER,OIL $4.14
WIX Part # 51334 {#DG3593A, HM3593A, PH2856A, PH3593A, PH6010, PH6010A, PH6811, PH9688, TG3593A, XG3593A} $5.12
FRAM Part # PH9688 {Full-Flow Spin-on (Rebate Available! See Promotions & Rebates Page for Details.)} $5.70
BECK/ARNLEY Part # 0418151 $6.39

Also, not online, but my local walmart also sells the ExtraGuard and "Extended Guard" FRAMs - which according to the packaging are "higher quality" filters...

Part Type Part Note
EXTENDEDGUARD XG9688
TOUGHGUARD TG9688
EXTRAGUARD PH9688

How would those rate with the above list?

I know on the Extended Guard and Tough Guard Oil Filters, they are "For Full Synthetic" and "For Synthetic Blend Oil" - is there any harm in using these filters with conventional oil? Or is there a difference in structure that would cause damage if used with conventional motor oil? I just got a new (to me lol) vehicle and it's been neglected and just want a good filter with proper filtration and looking for a "higher quality" oil filter.

No harm will come from using conventional oil. I think they're trying to imply that you should only run the extended OCIs with synthetic oil, as opposed to cheap conventional.

Generally, I would avoid ExtraGuard. While there's a brazillion vehicles that use them, I'm a bit skeptical of their quality; I've seen several cut apart that have various defects. The ToughGuard and ExtendedGuards are "pretty decent" and "excellent", in that order.

You really didn't say what is important to you. As far as a sturdy filter likely to filter well, the Tough Guard might be the best. Price, the Pronto. Made in America by an American company, the AC or Wix. I am concerned about River Rat's reports of leaky Wix filters. The last PF1127 I looked at was conventional construction with a dome end bypass. The next one could be an Ecore. I am still drinking the Ecore Kool Aid. I have seen too many good reports to let one bad one change my mind.

As far as buy American goes, what was all American this morning, may not be by the time your filters are delivered. There have been reports here that the Pronto is no longer American made.

I would go with the AC. I think Wal-Mart has it for less than $4 and I know another store here does. Bet AAP does too.

That was my thought and reasoning for making the thread. Just interested in a "good quality" filter. And was kind of confused by the comparison chart on the FRAM site; if that means those filters are to only be used with Synthetic or SynBlend...but in the meantime I did contact them through their site in hope for a response.

Basically just looking for a good quality filter in the median price range...I know some sites had K&N "aftermarket" filters for my vehicle listed, I understand they are high quality (or is that just their air filters, with the large fanfaire?) but 12$ is kind of steep; and that's before shipping cost. BUT, have not been to the local AAP/AZ to compare; figured I'd start online first, since prices online can sometimes be cheaper (just gotta figure shipping).

And well, I was skeptical at first since I never heard of PRONTO or the Pro-Tec name but was familiar with ACDelco and WIX (primarily through the media....but no actual "research"- so even then, that's to take with a grain of salt).

As far as the KIA OEM filter, that's what I got in it now, seems to be working good; but $32 for the oil change is kind of steep (can get it done down the street for $15 at a Pennzoil Quick Lube station with no wait usually).

Unfortunately enough has changed since that study that it tells little about current filters.

I was really happy with the Pronto I picked up last year, Made in American by Hastings, part of Clarcor. Looked good on the outside. Since then I have heard they have gone Asian.

I think the Pro-Tec is one more made by Bosch.

labman... has this thing that every filter has to made by an American owned company and be Americal made.

So thats his criteria...which misses some really good filters.

He dispises the Purolator PureOne (a great mid-priced filter) because Bosch (A German Co.) purchased Purolator in 2006...but the PureOnes are made in the good old USA by American workers.

PureOnes have great filtering ability and are one of the best out there for the price.

I love PureONEs. I also use NAPA Golds, (Wix) which are owned by Affinia, in the USA, and Made here as well.

And then there it Oregoonian and a few others that continually sing the praises of Purolator like they were anything more than one more ordinary filter.

Well made, good filtration, Made in USA... A great price. What more can you ask for?

I really like Purolator, not only are they a nice looking filter. They are priced reasonably and are very convenient to purchase at alot of auto stores. They also make my favorite auto maker filters, Motorcraft and Mopar, which tells me, Iam about as close to OEM as possible when not using MC or Mopar.

All filter should be constructed like this Motorcraft made by Purolator, especially the way the base end bypass is constructed. That is the way a bypass should be even if it does take up some of the filter area.

That is interesting, I have saw on the Fram site they made a XG9688 but I have never seen one in person.

Also you can use either a Tough Guard or Ectended Guard with conventional oil with no problems.

ProTec is not made by Bosch.

I agree fully on the thread end bypass. Fewer and fewer of them around.

I do note the uneven pleats in the pictures. Buying Bosch isn't the answer to evenly spaced pleats. .

Pleats that are slightly uneven are not a problem unless the filter in question is a Ecore, in which it is very easy to tear holes in media that are lying flat. Usually the parts that are widely spread apart are where where the two ends of the media are joined together.

I put my first Pronto on my truck in December, and plan to leave it there longer. It was made in America by Clarcor. Unfortunately, I have heard they have gone Chinese.

I have used a variety of other Pronto products in the past and had good luck with them. They are a buyers group. The Pronto jobber here is the leading auto parts store in town, where the pros go, not a DIY place like AAP or AZ. It is a name I trust.
