Guys,

I was organizing my oil filters and noticed that I have a Wix that fits my 2002 Toyota Tacoma that got pushed to the back. I looked at the date code and it is from 2012. It has been kept in a closet in my house (climate controlled, obviously) the entire time. I looked down the center tube with a flashlight and everything looks perfect. No rust or anything. My question is: do I use it at my next oil change? Or do I just toss it? Does the paper element degrade significantly over time if stored properly? This is a regular Wix (not an XP).

Thanks in advance for any opinions or comments.

Don’t think its old at all, certainly not 2012.

Louvers and no base-end bypass, as your pics show, only began on the 51348 fairly recently.

Honestly, I didn't think it was that old. I remember getting it when O'Reilly had one of those deals where they threw in a free oil filter with the purchase of oil. But I have no idea when. I would've guessed 6-7 years ago, but doesn't that date code indicate it was manufactured in 2012? Or am I reading it wrong? I googled around and that code in the photo seems to mean 2012. Thoughts?

2021 is more likely.

Your filter is NOT made in 2012 at all. Made 2021

I’d use it

even if it was 2012, I know everyone here would say to use it.

I got a batch of CHEAP wix made private label filters from rockauto several years back ( like $1 ea). the Company they were labeled for was "Big A Auto", who went out of business in '97 or so...
being the cautious type, and not wanting to mess up my buddy's car they were for, I emailed Wix about them. they Don't recommend using ANY filter more than 5 yrs old, because of potential breakdown of the Media and the Glues.... ( also they can sell more filters that way, but that's neither here or there)

not saying NOT to run an old filter, just inserting what the OEM said, and putting my 2 cents in.

I've run older filters before (10 years old, approx.) without issue. As long as it's stored properly indoors, there's no rust and the ADBV is still pliable, I see no issues. I probably wouldn't run one that's 20 years old, though. I feel like the ADBV would probably be getting brittle by that point.
