Wix filter and Auto Xtra fitler..... Same?

I use to buy WIx filters long time ago and paid almost $10CDN each fot it. Then I heard Auto Extra filters made by Dana also and they are exactly the same and costs less than half.

It appeared to be same as Canadian Wix filter by looking at it but still wondering if they are exactly the same filter.

I can't tell you if those two filters are identical except for the names, but I can tell you that most(all?) oil filter makers make filters for others, house brands, etc, & just because it's made by the same company does *Not* guarantee it's an identical filter. Example: The Penske & Castrol brands formerly sold by K-Mart were made by Wix-Dana. There were two grades of Castrol filters, the cheaper grade Castrol filter appeared to be identical to the Penske in every detail except for the paint. Even then, the filter paper might have been different. The other Castrol(MaxProPlus?)looked a lot closer to a full-fledged Wix inside, but I suspect it wasn't quite identical to a "real" Wix. After all, Wix is their flagship filter line, & it doesn't make sense for them to make the identical filter available under another name for less money.

And then there's Champion, they make Mobil 1, Bosch Premium, Walmart SuperTech, & who knows how many others...

I would bet on this: if it's made by Wix/Dana, it should easily be good enough for "normal" oil change intervals.

i have an auto extra 51344 sitting right in front of me, and i just changed the oil with one today on my honda civic. it's on its 6th auto extra filter. i can get them for about $4, and they're so much better than fram, so why the hell not.

yes they're made by wix, they have the same characteristics as their 'value' line.

i like the napa pro selects alot..well made....so i assume this is the same. go ahead and use it with confidence.

i see them for sale on ebay. which retailer is selling these autoextra?

A Wix sales rep told me at a recent trade show I was at that they are their second-line brand.

I just picked up an Auto XTra myself today for a friend's truck, and yes, I too have noticed the gasket, threading and valve at the top of the filter looks exactly like a Wix.

Has anyone ever cut open an Auto XTra? Maybe I should pick another one up next time and see if it has metal end caps and good filter media or not.

The only thing I'm wary about is that it doesn't say on the filter that it meets or exceeds OEM specs. Even the [censored] Tire red Motomaster ones (made by Fram of course) say theirs meet or exceed OE specs.

Auto Extra cut open. Has the combination ADBV/bypass which isn't really popular with some.
