Wix 51085 cut open

[HX520W]

This filter was installed on a 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.8L in January 2013 and was in service for 7250 miles until February 2014.

(Sticker fell off because the engine has a small oil leak.)

The side with the seam in the media looks seamless!

The side opposite the seam looks good too.

Looks very good. I love WIX filters, but my Jeep hates them. Very noisy on start ups.

Is this the spec'd filter for your van? The 3.8 Wrangler specs one slightly smaller than that.. I was just thinking about this today actually. Lol.

Yes, this is the first Wix I've used and their product finder gave this model number. It also looks the same as the M1 it replaced.

Does it cause a startup noise on your 1999 Jeep Cherokee? I noticed your Jeep and dlundblad's Jeep both have the 4.0L straight six.

WIX / NAPA are nice

however has anyone ever proved the Bypass works?

Or much oil can go throuh its bypass?

However great filter media and they are built like tanks

No it does not , however using any filter that is not a end bypass design will cause it to have startup noise. Example tried a few Purolator classics before the "tearolator" scare a few years ago and it rattled a little bit. I will use the Wix or Mopar filter to prevent this.

I have had very good luck with the Mopar filter which is also the end bypass, but I was unimpressed with the quality when I cut one open. I believe Fram uses a dome end bypass which doesn't seem to cause any issues for me (yet). I used the Mobil 1 filters for a while and experienced the same start up noise with them as well. They are quality filters no doubt.. they just don't work well with my application.

Mopar cut open. 5000 miles Pennzoil conventional.




On a side note, my dad uses Mobil 1 filters on his Renix 4.0 with no start up chatter whatsoever. He ordered 1 from Oreillys (different thread pattern than the 51085, Mo-90, etc) and they gave him a case of 12.. The clerk even said it was their mistake and still gave him 12 for the price of 1. He is set for a while so there is no going back. Lol.

Another great looking Wix. Wix looks like the best option for those now scared of Puro's and suffering from a Fram phobia.

You guys with Jeeps need to try a Wix made Napa Silver, I'm not kidding best starting and running filter I've tried on my picky Jeep, even at 10 below!

I'm thinking about running my TG for 5000 plus an additional 3000 this winter with Pennzoil Conventional 5w30.. Then Ill give your Napa Silver a run. Lol.

First time I've heard that theory/comment (in red). I would think any start-up noise due to an oil filter would be caused by a leaky ADBV, not where the bypass valve is located.

Agreed, I don't doubt you may have had start up noise with the Puro's (they were one of the worst on my picky Jeep) but I'd blame the ADBV myself. The fancy Wix thread end bypass arrangement doesn't pass muster on my Jeep either (but the cheaper Silver version does) but the dome end bypass Fram Tough Guard does. More about the ADBV's IMO.

From my research it looks like Chrysler changed the oil filter size for the 3.8L engines to the smaller Wix equivalent 51348 size in 2007. Has anyone tried using this Wix 51085 or equivalent filter on the post 2007 engines to see if it gets rid of start up noise?

I wouldn't think the size of the filter would have anything to do with noise.

The 1348 size crosses to a Motorcraft FL-910s, the Motorcraft S series filters are one of the very best you'll find at combating start up noise in my experience.

I have a few Wix (Napa Gold) 1348's on hand for my son's Chrysler but haven't used on yet, have used Motorcrafts FL-910s' on it but it isn't noisy at start up, it's just noisy ha ha.
