Check your dipstick O-rings!

All good. I wouldn't be mad if she had a third gen 4runner! Also her MAF sensor was cleaned when I checked the PCV, I believe. Or the OCI prior. I'd have to check my spreadsheet.

That engine did not see 5k OCIs before you bought it. More like 15k OCIs.

I would do Supertech Synblend High Mileage every 3k, at least until a nearby rooster crows 3 times in 5 minutes.
Don't use a high trapping filter either. Use a high flow like Fram Extra Guard, at least until a nearby pig storms your front door carrying a load of mud.

The first two things that come to mind here. One is the engine does not appear to be very well maintained. I base that comment on the filter media dissection pictures. The second thing that comes to mind is whatever oil was in there is doing some cleaning, in fact quite a bit imo.

If it were mine I would do a few short OCI's with Restore and Protect with a good filter and dump it in 3K intervals. I'd cut open the filters looking for a reduction of sludge like deposits.

Recently picked up a case of the exact same part number PENTIUS oil filters. Feel better after seeing this thread and what they can put up with.

The one on the bottom of dipstick tube on my mower is leaking. 25 years old and it's shrunk. JD only sells it as an entire dipstick tube though and no dimensions. So have to take it apart and then go look.

That amount of sludge makes me wonder if air filters were correctly installed or an airbox leak after the filter. Another thought, do you have to add coolant to this engine ?

Maybe a little top off once a year, so no, not really. Air filters have all been replaced at normal intervals and properly installed.

Good ol' BITOG. It will continue it's steady diet of whatever xW-30 I have around and these Pentius filters will be swapped out halfway through the OCI. Slowly cleaning out. No oil usage or MPG drop, so engine is fine. Dipstick O-ring was replaced, so it should be good to go.

The air filter is changed with OEM every third or 4th oil change.
That's way too often unless you live in a dust bowl and even then.
I don't see how an engine series with a great reputation is spitting out sludge as witnessed by those filters. Doubtful it's the dipstick.

Maybe the sludge is coming from the clean intake air??
Yeah, not saying the sludge in the oil filter pleats is a result of swapping air filters too often but it could be a source of engine wear.
Lots of material on BITOG concerning this.
Like I said unless you live in a dust bowl then
30-40k miles should suffice maybe even longer.

One think I dont like on my 21 Honda HRV is that the oil dip stick is all plastic....Would rather have the older metal style....
