If it's slippery enough that I'll spin the tires if I try to start moving in 1st, I put it in 4HI until I get rolling, put the clutch in, move it back to 2HI, and then carry on in 2nd. Could also just start in 2nd, but I never did enjoy doing that...

To the Explorer experts here: can the rear seats be easily removed/folded to increase cargo space?

Yes, you pull a lever to fold them forward. Even in the Sport model it gives you a good bit of cargo room.

+ Whatever for any Subaru with good tires. For a beater I'd think of a 96-2001/2? Outback Sport. Has the 2.2 which is about bulletproof. Fairly easy to work on, great AWD system.
