Will horizontal filter be empty after sitting?

It really isn't required to stop anything. It only has to stop rapid backflow. Besides ..what harm is there to "dirty" oil going back where it just came from

I think it's best that the junk on that side of the filter doesn't make another trip through the oil pump.

That's why the ADBV is merely required to hold for such and such a length of time. If having oil drain back was some real evil event ..then every auto manufacturer would prohibit Fram from every being put on one of their engines while in the warranty period.

I'll speculate that the "S" designation on many Ford OEM or OEM approved after market filters (aka MotorCraft) is to prevent customer complaints about startup rattle ..which some engines may be more prone to then others. If, infact, it was harmful to the engine ..to any appreciable degree, then they too would absolutely prohibit the use of any filter that has a nitrile ADBV.

They don't. What does that tell you?? It tells me that the oil migrating back to the pan if of no consequence. The rapid backflushing of the media is what is being avoided ...for the reasons that you just stated. They don't want you to send any captured debris back to the pan "en mass".

That makes sense. I'll go with that.

Let me add that it's surely nice when the thing does hold for 24 hours or more ..and that it is surely annoying when they don't. Now if you're a freak for instantanious lubrication ..and you don't want you "no load start" to have 1/10 sec of non-full pressure lube ..then that's something to consider.

No it will not. I have a 1982 Toyota Starlet that has the filter upside down at a 45° Angle. Everytime I would change it the filter would leak a lot of oil onto the ground below. Even then the filter still had a lot of oil in it once off the car. If the anti-drain back valve is working right you should never have an emtpy filter.
