I think you want to leave it on Auto so that it will dynamically change channels and choose those that are least occupied by your neighbors at any given point in time.

That's exactly right. The idea of auto is that the router scans all available channels on boot to find the cleanest one, then broadcasts on that channel.

Also let me clarify, what felt warm to the touch was the middle of the case. I did not try touching the antenna connectors, which is what Nick described as hot.
Just touched one of the antenna connectors. It's warm, but nowhere near finger burning hot.
Another update: what is finger burning hot is the USB port, or the the part of the USB thumb drive that is connected to the router's USB port. Too bad I don't have my infrared thermometer with me. The right hand side antenna connector is pretty toasty as well. I was checking the left hand side one before which was not hot.
