Remember the tree of knowledge was NOT for us to partake in. The apple you were tempted with...well...did it taste good?

+1

It's a terrible thing what you have done. You better forget about all you read. Otherwise you will have to confess to her that you read her email because she will know sooner or later. Despite all the frustrations she is still with you, isn't she? So calm down and forget what you read.

Hmmm...sure, maybe you shouldn't have read her emails.

But on the other hand, using a private email account to talk ---- to another person about you behind your back is a whole different thing from spilling her guts to a diary. How fair is it to you that you have to interact with her family members who (unknown to you) have been told things that should have stayed within the 'circle of trust'?

If you were a good actor, you could say things that indicated that you knew what she said about you...but make it sound like her family were the ones who tipped you off. If she is that catty about you behind your back you can be sure there's not a high level of trust in her family. Sow seeds of discord on their end, pop open a cold one and enjoy the show.

But, seriously, if I were you I would do and say things to make it clear to my wife and her family that I was a man to be respected. I'd start by inviting them to dinner at your house, sit at the head of the table, and then stare at the first person who starts eating before you do. Then, when they inevitably start gossiping about others during the meal, say "in this house we don't talk about people behind their backs". They will get the hint.

I wouldn't worry about it at all. People say things like that all the time about others. Now, I'm not married so I can't really give you advice but ... I've had the opportunity (several times) of knowing what people talk about me behind my back. You know what, it's their opinion and most of the time - it is what I need to hear because I need to change something I'm doing or what not. I don't hold it against them. I wish they would tell me but most people think they'll hurt you if they tell you so they keep it quiet.

What I'd do is take the info and go. Now you know she doesn't like it when you call her for in-store directions.

I like Matt89's advice in the post above. TallPaul has a good point too

.

To be honest - I've had the opportunity of reading family member's e-mails (as I'm the computer guy for the family) - but I made it a point to never do that. Now... if I ever get married I think I'll carry that policy over. Either way, I'd have nothing to hide to my wife. Hope it would be the same in return.

Well, I'd say that you need to take the high road here and treat this as an accidental viewing of privileged information. (Let me add, as a side bar, that although I pride myself on this ability to view this as her PRIVATE thoughts ..99% of those I know couldn't resist "using" this as a tool to gain some imaginary "upper hand" in the eternal battle of the sexes.) Now, and this I'M SURE of, if the situation were reversed, your wife would cut you to pieces without batting an eye for such transgressions ..and punish you for an eternity for them ...but you've got to realize her handicap in these matters. She has friends and an ego too. As you mature ..and if you gain wisdom and some of the imagery of the bonding process are removed ..and you come to grips with the core motivations and realities of such things, I think you too may, in joking, reduce stuff to the lowest common denominator in rhetorical reference.

You need to realize that she's not as candid as you expected in her more intimate opinions of life as you see it. My wife openly whines about my apparent shortcomings ...and it's a total joke. She'd kill for me. Now I'd die for her ...but she'd kill for me. Once you enslave a woman to you ..and you're the king of your domain ..don't expect your primary subject to act grateful for being put in the position. In fact, they'll do whatever they can to belie the notion that they're "yours". They have their warped images of self esteem with their pals ..and they don't get to measure their ego in terms of range, with elevation, into a headwind.

"She never forgave me for making her love me."

G0D - I love my life!!

As far a in-laws and their opinions ...WHO CARES? My FIL is one miserable SOB ..he knows it ..I know it. He will always promote "his" and be critical of "others". It's in his nature. My wife's younger brother has been writing checks his reality can't cash for all of his life ..yet he's a champion in my FIL's eyes. Her older brother got where he is because, in part, due to me getting him a job in an organization that he flourished in. Yet ..I'm still the lousy son in-law

Who cares?? If I depended on meeting his criteria for my personal self esteem, I'd never be anything but a disappointment no matter how many hoops I jump through. He'd always have to assure, in his mind, that he did a better job with his son's.

If she ain't cheating on you and you can trust her 100%, what's the problem? Get over it. All is good in the world. Quit sweating the small stuff. Women talk.

Pretty trivial stuff.

Women do like to complain about their hubbies to friends and family. Its a "feel good" thing. They blow off a little steam and feel superior for a bit.

Most times its just a ploy to get the respondent to open up with personal tidbits. We have all done this.

As far as what the inlaws think. Who cares?

Someone else mentioned having fun with the whole thing. Use your new found knowledge and turn it around. The possibilities are limitless ... lol. You have found a terrific source of entertainment.

It doesn't sound like there's anything too bad there. I am surprised she holds things like her opinion of your sisters back from you though!

Throw some oil in a metal can and tell your wife to try to light it!

A buddy of mine once used a keylogger on his own computer to get his girlfriend's password when he suspected her of cheating on him. He was right, so I think it was justified!

The next time she does something stupid (she's a woman, it's only a matter of time) talk down to her and say "Aparently stupidity runs in your family". See if she gets mad or just gives you a deer-in-headlights look.

Sorry to talk badly about your wife, but she seems rather 2-faced. If she has a problem with you or anything you've done, she should talk to YOU about it, not broadcast it over e-mail and act as if nothing's wrong to your face. I HATE THAT.

My ego and self esteem took a hit, but I didn't learn anything too serious. I must say it does change my perspective on our life together. Too bad, she didn't have any emails past 2005. It would have been an interesting reading regarding my obsessive compulsive oil obsession that started back in 12/02 when I registered at this site. It's kind of waned now, I don't stock over 200 qts now or look at the oil shelves anymore, but I'm assuming I was a target of her rantings/jokes about my oil fetish.

I'm just going to forget about it and act like I never read it. The hard part is trying to talk to her about keeping stuff inhouse without tipping her off that I read her email. Because like the previous poster, I would never hear the end of it and it would go bad for me.

btw, I have heard of email blunders in the past, girls who forward the wrong email to someone at work or are caught saying negative things about someone and the whole office got sent the email by accident.

Coot values his chosen hermit-like existence and decision to keep females out of the shanty even more after peeking at this thread.

I think you're getting bad advice here. Where there's smoke there's fire. How would she handle it if she read things you said about her family?

My ex happened to be at a large party my fiance' (now my wife) and I attended. The ex got really drunk, and began telling our former friends that I never was really interested in sex, and she was glad it was over. Naturally the comment made it down to my fiance'.

You'd have to know my wife. She can go deer hunting with the boys, change oil in the truck, and clean up and go to the opera, and look good doing all three.

My fiance' made it down to where the ex was, and whispered in her ear how good the sex was between us. Then she took a champagne bottle out of an ice bucket and proceeded to dump the ice water on the ex's head.

If you can't trust them with the little things, you've got trouble my friend.

Your snooping is worse than anything you've mentioned here.

I disagree. I think it's reasonable for a married person (man or woman) to be curious why their spouse feels the need to maintain a password-protected email account in the first place. What possible good can come of it? It's only human nature to peek I think.

Good luck to you, Cutehumor...If it was just a girlfriend, I'd say drop her like a bag of dirt. Since you're already married, the guys who tell you to ignore it are probably right. Even so, for awhile I imagine that it will be tough to trust that she's "got your back" when the chips are down. Sad.
