Wife is making grumblings about new vehicle....

Right before we retired we bought our last new car, wife was driving a GMC Terrain but got tired of it, said she's not a soccer mom, local GMC dealer had a couple of 2017 Buick Regal GS's for end of year sales, one was white and the other Black Cherry, they were both in the back lot collecting dust, sales guy took us to the back and the wife fell in love with the Black Cherry, we drove home in our new GS.

Do you still have it? How is reliability and ease of maintenance? The old school part of me still desire a Buick or Caddy as a self statement that I made it but I keep leaning toward Lexus because I know it is a financially responsible thing to do and I get old money vibe with Lexus’s Americano derived design, a hint of European performance, and the ultra reliability of old Asia.

Funny thing. My Jetta floated so much I actually bottomed out all four corners on the interstate (I-93 Boston) at speed. Almost lost control. I would think that could only happen on a 90's Buick Roadmaster land yacht! BTW, I was the only one in the car and was carrying no luggage.

Later after leasing the car I saw this same complaint during a KBB vehicle test. (2019 VW Jetta S "More Corolla than Corolla, Sorry Corolla")

Dangerously underdamped actually.
While I agree that the latest generation of Jetta has lost some of it's Euro handling characteristics, I think VW purposefully changed to a softer setup for those who are looking for a more "comfy" ride. Remember, VW doesn't offer the Passat anymore, so I think this change is to create an amalgamated product.
I've driven at least a few of these cars as rentals. Everything in the review you posted I agree with.
I've also said it before on this forum that if I wanted a no-frills, basic daily driver, the latest generation of Jetta would be in the top considerations for it's comfort, fuel economy, low purchase price and warranty.

Better view of the road at the expense of normal car users… And that self centred arms race is pointless anyway now you all drive the bloody things!

And sadly the easy ingress doesn’t make extracting your corpse from the rolled over wreck any easier… I dislike them on environmental grounds as they unnecessarily consume resources and contribute a lot of GHG and air quality emissions, and I dislike them on the basis they unnecessarily kill a lot of people. Doesn't feel overly unreasonable to question choices made to use them...

Well if my '18 Forester were ever in an accident with either of you car There would be no rush geting you our. Ny biggest problem would be buffing out the damage to my XT.

I know you have disdain with the automatic features. I have a '24 GR86 (I won't humilate you by comparing it to your 2018) But a while back a guy pulled out on me while on a country road. It was hitting the s before I could get my food off the accelerator. You will never be able to buy a car that doesn't have these features. @Haakon: what does your significant other drive?

My 22 Forester got better mileage than your 2018. It will automatically brake for pedestrian or cyclist in pitch dark. Will yours do that.
Statistically my '22 Forester will be safer for me or others and more environmentally better than yours. And in the event our cars were involved in a crash bc yours could not automatically stop..my chances of survival would be considerably better than yours. But I digress.

Thanks for making this thread eminately entertaining.

Again to the OP get the safest car with all the automatic bells and whistles. Sadly I got my wife her '18 Forester bd I did not trust the features, and thought they would fail..yada...yada..yada. But Unlike Haakon I learned...I have asked her if she wanted my '22. She said no. And she only drives around town and it is a Subaru (safe)

She (we) drive this old girl. Shown here during an interstate move and demonstrating why SUVs are over rated ;)

I’ve always let wife pick her car, maybe with a little guidance about reliability etc but it’s worked out so far. Last one was the 02 Wrangler we’re driving because she thought it was time to have one we’re not getting any younger.

Edit to add seeing OPs attitude above about not helping wife buy a car never mind. It looks like it’s your money not our money.
My wife does trust me to pick a good car for her. But if she disliked the choice. That car is out.
