so my nephew's Wife, has a 2017(?) Escape, that her parents got her used when she graduated HS (class of '19).
back in Nov. they noticed the Coolant was "disappearing", ( of course, it's a '16+ 2.0 EB) . He found a shop that would do the head Gasket, ( for like $4k), he agreed to do that, because no one else in the area would touch it, but decided once it's fixed, they'll start looking and trade it in, before anything else goes wrong. ( shop had the car for a few months, just trying to work it in where they could, as they were the ONLY place that would do just the head gasket, and not want to immediately put a new engine in.
in the mean time, she's driving her Mom's Wrangler Unlimited. and REALLY enjoying ( Sarcasm) the low MPG's on her 45 min/42ish mile each way commute.. (1/2 2 lane state route, and 1/2 interstate)

he has quite the list of "demands" for the new(likely used) vehicle.
1- No Turbos
2- No CVT
3- AWD
4- decent ground Clearance
5- at least as good fuel economy as the Escape
6- room for a stroller in the back.
this was the list he said at Thanksgiving, and we just found out a couple days ago, that they're pregnant with their first. ( My Sister, his mom, said she'd known for "a while" but they just recently let her tell people)

so what says the BITOG Collective, Which magical vehicle should he be looking at, that's Reliable, N/A, normal slushbox, AWD, 6 in or so of clearance, and 25+mpg, with room for kid stuff?
and of course, he would prefer American.

I was going to ignore the AWD requirement and suggest various other cars. I'm assuming they plow the roads where these people live?
Yes they do, it's a main state route, very well maintained, but he wouldn't hear of her only having fwd... Meanwhile he drives a '99 F-150 XL, V6, 5 speed, rwd, standard cab long bed.

Dodge Journey I4 :sneaky:

It has a 4-speed auto, AWD, American name, and meets the other requirements too :geek:

For the head gasket, they should've tried head gasket sealer first :D

What about a Hybrid? Something like a CRV Hybrid, Rav4 Hybrid? '22 RX350 with a 6 cyl.?

Honda Pilot for 3 row and more room, Honda Passport for 2 row. V6, I think 9 Speed transmission, The Trailsport versions have real skid plates, recovery points and more clearance.

Also put the future plug for a full set of at least really good All Weather tires or spare rims with true winter tires. If looking for the AWD for a "safety" aspect, the true winter will be better choice.

Don’t have them replaced the head gasket. The coolant intrusion is because of a blocked design not a head gasket. There’s a TSB on it.
too late. that convo was back around thanksgiving, and her escape was already at the shop waiting.. might already be done, we don't get to talk all that much.
