vehicle suggestions for nephew's wife?

I wanted to be on the anti-AWD bandwagon in this case but I'm not clear what her job is--if she is on call she might "need" to make it into office regardless of weather. I recall my MIL, when she was an x-ray tech, during one storm or two, the hospital talked about sending someone out to get her (mind you, she lived a mile away, it wasn't that far--but she is not a snow driver and these were big storms).

If she "needs" AWD and modest clearance then she also needs snow tires, IMNSHO. Snows are really needed on non-AWD but not really any less important on the much fabled AWD's.

Having the larger boot of a CUV might be good too, with kids, although we managed two kids with a sedan. More space is better space, but it's not always "needed". But sure is nice, no doubt about that!
Cardiac Ultrasound Tech.

years back, when we actually got winters, My sister ( before she was married or had kids) had her Phlebotomy License lived in the same town as them, and worked 3rds at a hospital half way to where nephew's wife works. one particular storm was bad enough, they had closed the county, no one allowed on the roads except emergency equipment.
the Hospital sent Sheriff's Deputies to pick her up. her county's Deputy drove her to the county line, where there was a cruiser from the next county waiting, she changed cars, and they took her to work. I'm guessing she got home the same way..

i've lived in this area 90% of my life. with VERY few exceptions, no one "needs" AWD around here. FWD will be more than sufficient 99.5% of the time.
when we do get a large snow, that particular county road can get a bit drifty in places, ( Flat, Glaciated NW Ohio, lots of open Farm land), but it is well maintained, as it's a main, heavily traveled State route. Lots of Truck Traffic.

I dont understand the mentality...They have known provable engine issues. Ford shoud just make a policy that all these engines get replaced free. Do they have any idea what good will that will bring? They would probably have a customer for life. What would this engine cost them to replace? you know what im say Actual cost parts and labor?1200? all in. So what they are telling you is your not worth 1200.00 to fix a 100% failure rate flaw they they know about and created. They dont care if you ever purchase a ford again or if you tell your freinds and family about it... What! Come on just fix your mistakes. Isnt that what we have all learned through life? Own up to your mistakes and try to do better? I have had issues with ford as well.

IIRC Shortblock lists for about $2800 plus Labor. not sure the actual Cost, but that's the low side of what you can buy them for.

I did and online search... Yes one can find whatever they would like to fit one mind set but. a first search this is what I found and this is what I expected to see... from foundry to crate cost zero mark up. Complete
Example costs:
  • Basic four-cylinder engine: Around $400 - $600
  • Mid-range V6 engine: $600 - $800
  • High-performance V8 engine: Can exceed $1,

Fan of Hyundai or Kia? Maybe some of the other manufacturers with the "limited" bearing recall or collapsed lifter issues?

It would be nice but not holding my breath.

Call me jealous, this is a picture at work from 2 weeks ago, first time we see the sunrise at 8AM, and -30F.
We still get winter.

Short block I figure $400 actual cost delivered to the dealer for install with other orders to a distrubution center. They mass produced and are capable of making one of these quickly off the assembly line every 8 minuites out of mexico china or brazil. They have major factories in these and many other countries.

I dispise corperate greed and slide of hand antics. Grrr

wrenchturner4 had this on another post here...

"I can tell you this. In 2016, the Chevrolet Sonic 1.4 Turbo 4 cylinder engine cost GM $185.00 net. That same year the battery for the Chevrolet Bolt had a GM net cost of 9k."
Peace

My Neighbor had a $100000 top of the line GMC deneli with the 6.2 engine. Well it developed a tick as a lifter went lazy. They wanted to replacce the lifter. He said no. replace the engine. They replaced the lifter. He said I told you to replace the engine. They said GM said they wouldent approve it. He took the truck back and said Ill be back tommorow. They were confused. What do you mean, they asked? He said you will see tommorow. He returned with a picket sign that said something like GM is unfair stop and ask me why... He wasent out front for 15 minutes and he was approved for a new engine.

The moral of the story. Sometimes the people at the top have to be reminded that WE are the differance between them making a sale or a future sale or not. The reason he got the new engine? He told me he spoke with a bunch of people at the dealership when he was picketing and they all turned around and went the other way, instead of going inside to look at vehicles. The sales people watched them leave. ... My point. LOL

My wife gets about 27 28 highway at 65 ish with her 2017 outback the rav4 and cx-5 perhaps about the same. AWD costs about 2-3 mpg. Minivans are real nice rides as well. But they are heavy 26 mpg max. Oops ripcord stole the words as I tped them Seinna has a AWD version not sure about odyessy

They made a purchase...
Not sure it meets the ground clearance "requirement" or if it's AWD( though that was an option.)
They bought her a 2023 Camry, with 20,850 mi.

And because he was "concerned" about fitting a baby seat in his single cab '99 F150, be paid cash for an '07 Buick Rendezvous, supposed low mile, good condition from a friend's Aunt's estate, or something like that.
No pics of the Aztek Rendezvous .
I said, You bought a Buick Aztek? "Yep!" That's his dad mobile for now.

so my nephew's Wife, has a 2017(?) Escape, that her parents got her used when she graduated HS (class of '19).
back in Nov. they noticed the Coolant was "disappearing", ( of course, it's a '16+ 2.0 EB) . He found a shop that would do the head Gasket, ( for like $4k), he agreed to do that, because no one else in the area would touch it, but decided once it's fixed, they'll start looking and trade it in, before anything else goes wrong. ( shop had the car for a few months, just trying to work it in where they could, as they were the ONLY place that would do just the head gasket, and not want to immediately put a new engine in.
in the mean time, she's driving her Mom's Wrangler Unlimited. and REALLY enjoying ( Sarcasm) the low MPG's on her 45 min/42ish mile each way commute.. (1/2 2 lane state route, and 1/2 interstate)

he has quite the list of "demands" for the new(likely used) vehicle.
1- No Turbos
2- No CVT
3- AWD
4- decent ground Clearance
5- at least as good fuel economy as the Escape
6- room for a stroller in the back.
this was the list he said at Thanksgiving, and we just found out a couple days ago, that they're pregnant with their first. ( My Sister, his mom, said she'd known for "a while" but they just recently let her tell people)

so what says the BITOG Collective, Which magical vehicle should he be looking at, that's Reliable, N/A, normal slushbox, AWD, 6 in or so of clearance, and 25+mpg, with room for kid stuff?
and of course, he would prefer American.
Mazda cx-30 Mazda 3, slightly used Infiniti as they can be had for a great price. This is tough
