Why Valvoline is so famous?

We each have our personal favourites, for whatever reasons, but let's face it: who here has personal or direct experience that proves beyond doubt that Pennzoil is better than Mobil 1...or that AMSOIL is better than Synpower?

Or I could ask the question the other way: who here can prove that Quaker State is undeniably worse than Valvoline?

I submit that it can't be done...they're ALL good oils and our motors don't know the difference.

(The above are just examples...I don't mean to single out any specific oils)

BITOG has gotten me away from brand loyalty. LOL

Valvoline's been around a long time, and has always made consistently good products.

Valvoline 'VR-1', if I'm not mistaken, was one of the first real 'race oils' developed for mass-market appeal. Lots of 1960's and 1970's drag-racers and muscle-car owners swore by this stuff, and it seems to have delivered.

Also, the red, white and blue cans/logo certainly didn't hurt...

My 94 Nissan used white bottle Valvoline almost exclusively its for 10 years of service. Most oil drains were 3000-4000 miles, the most being 4500 miles.

Each time I have valve cover off to change gasket, it doesn't look as clean as you would like to see in the least bit, and the car developed a leak at less than six years.

Nevertheless, oil was very different in 1994 I am certain, and it didn't do a terrible job nevertheless.

I moved away from Valvoline for many years because I hadn't read too good of things about the white bottle on various forums in the early 2000s.

However, I have recently been using their MaxLife and NextGen Maxlife. They seem like solid products. I'm a fan again.

They have the most rebates and most creative new products (i.e. Maxlife, NextGen) that turn people's head. I don't think they are significantly better (or even better) than other brands but I always go for their rebates and they have always been good to me.

Castrol on the other hand never explains why I should pay more for their stuff. It is always "trust us" and "we do not release these information".

Because "Mechanics who know use Valvoline" (in their own cars more than other oils.) VWB. Remember the tag line?

I cant lie.. VWB looks like a good oil, just by the bottle.

I keep hearing that it isnt bad oil, but that there is better.

That said, I have ultimately chosen MaxLife and recently MaxLife Nextgen for Moly content (green bottle, red Maxlife on label) over M1, ST, PYB, and RP. Even over QS and Kendall.

Same here.

As for the VWB, compare the add. pack numbers to other oils, then draw your conclusion.

If you've got the best lab in the world, you can use it one of two ways.

First, is to make the best oil that you possibly can, charge a bomb for it, and have 95% of the users throw it away 50-80% too early.

Second is to make an oil that jumps over every approval hurdle, reliably, every time it's tested...but only by a small margin.

Third is to pick a larger margin on second, and market it like the first, allowing plenty of room for profit, rebates, and knowing that most of your customers are never going to stretch your product to the margin.

They are in the third somewhere, along with all of the majors. Some even got caught on some sequence or another not quite being up to snuff.

Lot of people on this forum recommend this oil and are big fans of it.

What is special about it? performance? how the engine is running? Oil analysis?
or maybe the price I paid for it ......

Unfortunately, there aren't many UOAs for dino oil of any kind on this web site. You need to use search. The few I have seen suggest it's a fine oil for 5000 mile change interval. Pretty average, not much better or worse, compared to competition like Castrol or Mobil Super 5000. I have a feeling that a lot more people on this web site like PYB the most among dino oil. It has high TBN and moly content.
