Why no Porsche recommendation for 5w-30?

I have an '09 Porsche 911 Turbo that recommends 0w-40 or 5w-40. Why is there no 5w-30 recommendation? The Bugatti Veyron comes with Castrol Edge 5w-30 in it's veins, and several Mercedes V-12, turbo charged engines have the 5w-30 also. I run Lubrication Engineers 8530 (5w-30) in my Porsche and have complete confidence in it. I guarantee there's nothing special about the Porsche engine compared to the Bugatti!! Why does my '10 Audi A8 also have the 5w-40 recommendation? I can't see what significant advantage 5w-40 has over 5w-30...and if there were, why wouldn't the massively expensive and technologically advanced Bugatti have it from the factory? It seems all those extreme, expensive, high-horsepower engines would have the same oil in them, especially since they're all owned by the Volkswagen group!? Thanks for the responses!

Doug can answer this. Mobil's 5w30 ESP meets the very demanding Porsche C30 spec.

I had the same ? with my lambo, but i figured im so flithy rich that i would just take it to the shop then worry about oil, i would rather spend more time pickin up hoes

It may, but TBN retention will be too poor to justify use on Ocis longer than 2500-3000 miles. Look at my tests on the rabbit 2.5.

Hi,
drkbrent - No SAE30 lubricanst have been Approved for Porsche designed engines since 1999

The Porsche Approvals process for these engines is very demanding especially in the areas of viscosity retention and foaming controls. This of course includes the minimum HTHS vis. of 3.5cP

And yes the Porsche Engineers know best IME

People who think they know more than the Car Manufacturer's engineers and designers make me laugh ! Especially Porsche, THEY KNOW what they are doing. Engine tolerances and design mean more than just oil temperature !

Because he's a Dr., just like our Dr. Haas. They all like to run Xw-20 in their exotics.

Seriously though, why not? If he can find a thinner lubricant that can safely do the job, why not?

Porsche – There is No Substitute.

According to an internal memo, obtained by me, under The Freedom of Information Act, they were actually talking about 5W-40 not the car.

It seems, when they shipped the 928 over to the set of Risky Business this document was left in the glove compartment. One of the writers, who was on L-Dopa for trying to use 5W-30, in Beverly Hills during a cold front, liked the line and decided to apply it to the car in the script. Years later he was seen putting Mobil 1 0W-40 into a Craftsman Snowblower and then attempting to cut his grass with it.

Doug, it seems you haven't studied oil 101 yet!!!

Wonder what Dave at Redline or Neo oil would rec?
It is not an Indy engine.

That's a poor analogy, Indy Engines only have to run 500 or so miles before a complete rebuild ! People who cite racing engines seem to overlook this fact.

Hi,
Corvette Owner - You said this:
"People who think they know more than the Car Manufacturer's engineers and designers make me laugh !"

I feel the same about this as you do - and I have worked as, for, with, and around such people since 1957! In the US, UK and Germany too!!

I'm with you Doug. Why does everyone think the engineers at car companies are morons who make arbitrary decisions?

Now come on. We all know that, after throwing a few back, the average backyard mechanic knows more about viscosity than those lucid, control freaks from Zuffenhausen.
