I go to the grocery store tonight to buy some romaine lettuce. All the lettuce's there were different sizes, but one single price: $2.49 each.

I weighed one lettuce at 10 ounces, and another one at 1lb. 2oz. Both the same price at $2.49 each.

Last year they were all at least 1lb. 8oz. and there were all 99 cents each!!

You guys should see what a 10oz. romaine lettuce looks like; it's puny!!

Makes no sense to me at all. Borderline ridiculous.

There's probably a disparity in the "useable" amount of lettuce, where the big ones have more inner hard "white stuff" or the outer leaf that you're supposed to toss because of germs. Those who win at shopping, win at lettuce.

Mine usually goes bad halfway through a head anyway-- I use it as a garnish.

$2.49 each? Ouch.. Could it be because California?

Its $.99 here everyday.

I agree with you.. surprised to not see it sold by the lb as I see many that vary in size. Cabbage is sold per lb and so it the other variations of lettuce (green leaf, romaine etc.)

Its the middle of winter, Iceberg is sold by each.

Green leaf, Red Leaf, Romaine, Red Romaine, Butter, Boston etc are all usually sold by the pound.

Iceburg Lettuce usually runs between 99$ and 2$ here.. currently 1.89 and really bad looking even fresh.

Possible Answer:

Most women know guys shopping in grocery stores looking for a date hangout near the lettuce because it's not sold by the per pound weight.

But your concern for spending $2.49 for options is discerning. Good Luck in selecting the best for you.

It doesn't seem like too many areas in California sell lettuce by the pound. However, most varieties where I am in NorCal are usually within .10 to .20 cents of each other with Iceberg sometimes being .50 cents more...and evidently price fluctuates in Clovis just like here. My understanding is that Romaine has the highest nutrition profile so that's what I buy...I gotta guess that Iceberg would be the least nutritious and often the most expensive.

even more confusing: Asparagus.
presented to the customer bundled together with a rubberband, but it's sold by the pound. and no, the bundles aren't necessarily 1lb bundles. it's more of a size thing.

Good observation. Lol.

Its the direct opposite with whole broccoli. Varying sizes, but they are banded together in pairs and sold as each.

$0.99 store has 3/$0.99.

Wife says if you buy your lettuce cut up in a bag you'll be able to buy it by the pound.

As far as I can remember all the way back to the mid 70s lettuce was always sold in supermarkets by the head.

Perhaps if you go to the farmer's markets it is different.

Here, sold by the head (regardless of punicity)
Lettuce - $1.50 (Oz)
Boutique Lettuce - $2, 2 for $3, so you can throw one out
Caulifower - $5
Cabbage - $4 for a small white or red anyday price. $2 for a large white in season.
Celery - $3
Broccoli - $6/Kg
Broccolini - $3 for a "bunch" aka tiny handfull
Asparagus - $2 for a lacka band's worth, either Oz, or Peruvian.

As to lettuce by the lb ?

It's like $20/KG to buy it loose leaf, drooping like used prophylactics.

These are more than 5 times what we pay in Southern California everyday, when these were on sale it can be purchased for less than 50% regular price.

Must be nice. Out here in MI, our prices are comparable to what you have highlighted in Shannow's post above, maybe with the exception of Cauliflower - that one's probably half the price.

Also not sure if Shannow was referring to celery hearts or celery root. I love using celery root for making soups and salads. Not all markets carry it though.
