Why is it taking so long for production to come back?

Since schools have been closed, a lot of potential workers cannot take a job. This will change as schools reopen.
Truck drivers have moved to other fields, given the opportunities. If you like to drive, this might be oyur time.
Wages need to increase to attract employees.
The choice to move offshore for cheap labor is hurting.

The government handing out free money in the form of stimulus checks drives demand up. These companies project demand and plan for production a year or more out sometimes. So put 15k in the hands of someone who makes 24k a year and has 4 kids they are going to spend that money on TV's appliances, Cars etc. Its artificial and will cause problems later as well, when all of these companies start to run negative year over year sales its going to hit the stock market and our 401K.

1) We were in the middle of a massive trade war with the whole world, so it was already very hard to get a lot of stuff into and out of the country
2) The rest of the world people believe they should protect themselves so they do not want to let people going everywhere, some nations prefer not to let high risk travelers in and as a result experts / workers / money / raw materials are not going around like before.
3) People are buying up a lot more than before because they are working from home, or cannot travel so they are buying toys instead of taking vacation.
4) Everyone is printing money so everyone with cash is spending, buying stuff, moving to a bigger home, moving further away, etc now instead of let inflation taking its toll.
5) Some MBAs believed just in time inventory is the key to profit but they forgot others who didn't cancel order earlier were getting ahead, keeping their inventories and orders so they have stuff to sell (see Toyota, they stockpile chips since Fukushima instead of cancelling chip orders like the Domestics, so now Toyota has a lot more chips and a lot more cars they can sell).
6) Social distancing at work place and travel restriction, things are made slower.
7) Some people decided to retire instead of working because they think everyone is getting abusive and aggressive (money is secondary as this is happening everywhere even when they are not getting unemployment benfits)

That is what people want to believe. However many people who worked in shut down businesses moved onto other fields and reeducated themselves. Who wants to work retail, factory work, food worker etc when they have new jobs with likely better pay, nicer working conditions and better career path.

Locally businesses who pay well have NO ISSUE hiring workers. The ones thinking $8-10/hr is acceptable and then adding a few more dollars struggle. Not their fault shut down but now raise your prices enough attract enough help.
Market economy is wonderful, until you do not want to be paying the market rate. Good for the people who motivate themselves and get into a better career, I'm happy for them.

The rest of the economy either pay up to match what is in demand and in supply or else.

I can flip that. I just talked to someone who works for a city government. They cannot find people to fill the plethora of job openings they have. Water division, parks, sewer, etc. These are well paying jobs. That is one example. I’ve heard from others in the warehouse sector, plumbers, and other good paying jobs that nobody will work. So it’s not just retail and restaurant and other service jobs.
City government never paid as well as the private sector. The only advantage was that they had a good retirement system and you didn't have to work too hard. I doubt they were able to raise their pay as easily as the private sector.

I could understand products and supplies being in short supply during the pandemic, but we're far enough along now that we should not still be seeing these shortages. Why is it taking so long for things to get back to full production?

other parts of the world (India as an example) experienced a tremendous outbreak after the USA. This is affecting the import side of things. Also there is a workforce shortage in the USA that is hampering production here.

just my $0.02

Here it's because so many are living off the govt. Every business has a help wanted sign out and nobody is wanting to work
I hate to say it but why should they? Most of those jobs pay low wages and no benefits and have limited access to child care. Maybe instead companies should reassess wages and quit paying upper management ridiculous 7 digit salaries and perks even when the companies are on a downward trend. I'll stop before it gets political and locks the thread.

I don't think the big corporate places are as bad off as the small mom and pop places. They're the ones afraid that if they raise prices to pay more, they will lose business that won't come back. But when you hear of places where you can get lunch for around $5, that's because it's a $7.25 minimum wage state. Can't do that around here as minimum is $13.50.

Lack of pride and ambition. Nobody wants to be a productive member of society anymore. Being a leech off the ones who are producing and pay taxes seems to be in favor now until the producers turn off the spigot.

When you need to pay $2k a month for childcare to make $3k a month, you probably would want to be a housewife as well. Eliminating housewife (or stay at home dad) would likely have a huge impact in the job market.

Many probably realize that working closer to home for a lower pay part time job may be better than a higher pay longer commute job as well. Many also decided to work from home after moving out of urban center. Most importantly a lot of grandparents retire to watch grand children because childcare is at limited capacity and dangerous until vaccine is around for that age group (we have 2 in my team retired this year because of that reason). They make 250k a year, not some $300 nonsense you think is going to make a difference.

My opinion is the government.
We give people unimploment plus an extra check, why would most go back to 40 plus hrs to make the same or a few hundred more a week.

Hard to have pride and ambition when you have to deal with the general public. One year of retail was enough for a lifetime for me, ironically the ones complaining about “kids these days” were the worst, most demanding, and entitled customers I had. The “kids” were easy going and could accept the fact that their coupon expired 3 weeks ago.

So all the companies that skirt paying taxes in the US and got massive government payout to stay afloat or the warren buffets or jeff bezos of the world that pay less taxes than their secretaries they aren't leeches. Double standard dude.

$1M+ pension doesn’t hurt after 30 years with a major city....

Max overtime the last few years with their city.

I work for the County government. The wage gap is as disgusting here as it is anywhere else. The lowest paid are the ones doing the grunt labor full time during this “pandemic” while the bosses still “work” from home and make 5x as much. I don’t blame people for not wanting the low paying jobs. I think worker morale has been crushed with all these lockdowns. People just aren’t motivated to go back to a job they don’t like.

You mean Bezos’s space trip made on the backs of workers urinating in bottles to make quotas isn’t right?

Id say that much of it is that while the US is doing fairly well, much of the rest of the world is not. You could even go so far to say that the US probably isnt doing as well as we'd like to think that we are either.
