Its good; its cheap.

I agree.

At least BITOGERs know better than to believe higher selling price is always a reliable indicator of top quality. Right?

There are BITOG folks who want only the "best" for their cars and the only way is to spend more $$!

I've been using Havoline for over 25 years, ever since I asked a trusted friend/mechanic about some minor oil consumption I was having in a 78 Datsun pickup. He asked what oil I was running, I said "Quaker State". He said "Try some Havoline, it will probably stop burning oil". I did, he was right, been using it ever since. Now I have learned here that it really is good oil. I have also learned that SuperTech ain't bad either so have been trying some of that now.

jeepman,
I have an 02 Cruiser also, and have been concerned about the noise. I've been a diehard Mobil1 user since I bought it, but did the Havoline really work well??Also, what's your OCI??

What about the winter? Would it be any more harmful to my engine/start ups to use this instead of M1??

I have been on short OCI's due to an ARX treatment I am running with the Havoline, so the 3 I have done since purchase have been 3k or less. I am on clean phase right now, and I am running the Supertech dino (made by ExxonMobil) and I am getting the same noise. I am sure the protection is there, but I can't get past the valve train noise and will not be using XOM products in that car again. No bash against Mobil products, just not a personal choice for me going forward. I have some Pennzoil Platinum in my stash that is going in next, but I intend at this point to go back to Havoline dino for 5k OCI's after that is gone. The car just ran really good on the Havoline and I was running the 5w30 in the winter with no problems, and no valve chatter, so I would recommend it. It seems to have a great price/performance ratio, and with no engine noise and a little ARX maintenance treatment I fully expect to run this little Cruiser for a long time.

thanks, jeepman,

but did you need the ARX on it?? how many miles do you have?? i've been running M1 for the life of mine, so I hope i don't need it too?!

i've only got 36k on mine, btw...

We bought it with 50k on it, so I figured I would just ARX it to make sure I knew it was clean. I didn't have any info on the service history, and didn't want to take the head cover off, so I just decided to ARX it at the same time I did our other 2 cars. I figured better safe than sorry. With M1 the whole time at 36k, you should not need it IMO.

Another perspective...probably moot now, but I'll share it anyway.

I had a 1982 Ford Escort piece of @#$% back in the '80s with a little piece of @#$% 1.6L in it, always ran Havoline in it cause it was cheap. Burned about 1.5 qts / 3K miles. Switched to Pennzoil and it completely stopped burning oil...completely. I didn't know *anything* about oil back then but went with Pennzoil from then on.

Of course, a LOT has changed since then, so Havoline is not even close to the same oil, and this is strictly anecdotal. But it always scared me off of Havoline. Now I'm with TropArtic, but I may try the Havoline again sometime soon.

Does the Havoline Syn and Semi-Syn have a lot of Moly, too?

I've used Havoline since the 1980's. Always a good product at a reasonable price. Also, I was a huge Davey Allison fan who was in NASCAR. I guess NASCAR marketing has to be a part of my buying decision as well. By the way, my local Advance Auto is having a grand opening and has Havoline for $1.18/qt. and used a $5.00 coupon on top of that.

LouDawg- I think if you look at the VOA section you will see that the Synthetic does not have the moly in it that the current SM Havoline does. All the Havoline Synth I have seen on the shelf at AA has been SL

The Family Dollar store about 10 miles away carries Havoline but not in the 5w20 I need. They have every other grade but that one. It is usually $1.79 qt. But I have to go 40 miles one way to find the nearest supplier of Havoline 5w20. I can't figure why the Dollar store does not stock it. I guess I will have to ask the manager.

In the middle 80's a (now retired) engineer from the Chrysler Trenton, MI engine plant admotted that all their people used Havolene because of their testing. I (at the same time frame) got a Detroit Edison engineer to admit the same thing. It was all they would use in their fleets of hundreds of cars and light trucks having arrived thru testing that it was the best oil. I don't know if it has changed or not, but I have a '92 Olds 88 with 230,000 mi and its still running good. I avoid Valvoline after a major engine rebuilder near Detroit toldme that most of the bad engines he got were due to Valvoline.

I've been reading posts here for a couple years now, and this is the first I've EVER heard of Valvoline being result of a "bad engine"....note previous post.
I'd like to know know more about that.
