2005 Toyota Sienna. Took it in to the dealer and while there I decided to have them change oil. They use only Valv Synpower for their synthetic, so I went with it. 3500 miles later it has used 1 qt. I have been running M1 in it for 2 years prior and it didn't use any oil between changes (I check). I'm not concerned about the one quart, just wondering why it would use oil with Synpower vs. M1?

Unless you were standing right there when they changed the oil how do you know they used Synpower. Dealers are shady and will do anything too make the extra dollar. Trust me I know I used too sell car dealers Lubricants for 14 years.

what drew said, hopefully will settle down after a few oci's, if you are gonna stick with it. If go back to M1 it will probably return to normal

Well M1 is about as synthetic as one can get OTC so it has a higher percentage of true G-IV and G-V base stocks wich are less volitile then the other base stocks used by their competition in far greater amounts then M1. This is why M1 almost never cause's consumption issues with vechiles and vechiles that do consume with M1 almost always consume more with other brands of like viscosity synthetic. Most other synthetics are a blend of GIIand GIII oils with just a touch of GIV or GV as correction fluid. The lighter viscositys of GII and GIII are still rather volitile compared to what M1 is useing. This is why PP has such insane usage and consuption issues. I first reported this fact almost a year ago when I tried PP 10W30 in my Lawn Tractor and it ate oil like a fat kid eats cake! Now this unith had never consumed any oil prior to this and when I went back to M1 it stoped instantly.

In fact the engine in your Sienna is not known to have any oil consumption issues at all so it is definately the oil and not the engine! GO back to M1 and it will stop! RTS 5W40 does well too!

I am going to go back to M1 5-30 until the powertrain warranty is up in 2010. I was leaning toward switching to synpower in the Sienna and my Explorer (4.0 SOHC). The 93 Jimmy gets Maxlife 5-30 synthetic and it really seems to like a slightly thicker oil. I am going to run the synpower in the Explorer---it has been on 5-30 M1 SUV for 40,000 miles (now has 106K) and doesn't burn a drop---and see if it starts to use oil too. Not that it matters, just a curiousity thing. Niether the Explorer or the Sienna used oil after I switched from conv to M1 a couple years ago.

Just to make sure, you checked this before the 3500 miles correct? Not to mention, after receiving the oil change?
