Why I don't use Purolator anymore...

Yeah, but then we'd have to question the quality of Shell & Chevron oils thanks to CSK's non-stop $.59/qt deals. And what about all these PP $15 rebates?

Sale oils are loss leaders for most of the automotive chains...I don't think it's a stretch that PB (Premium Plus) and AA (Purolator-made AAs) also do the same with filters. IMO, it has less to do with questionable products and more with getting you to also buy windshield wipers, fuel additives, an air filter, etc.

....... But for months now I keep seeing these 99 cent Purolator deals at Pep Boys and I wonder how good they are if they can be sold for 99 cents?

That means it is a loss leader for Pep Boys. They are selling at a loss to get you in the store in the hopes of something else catching your eye and bought a full retail with higher profit margin built in. Just cause it is discounted does not make them cheap.

I have two Purolator PL14610 PP with different date codes, about a year apart for my Honda. After seeing this thread I looked over my filters real well. The threads are very clean, and both look identical in thread quality. I have one on the car now and have no problems with it. I wish it had a silicon ADBV but for a basic filter with really good filtering media for the price, they are hard to beat, for a 5K OCI. I paid $2 on sale for mine at AAP about a year ago.

Also have on hand a Honda by Filtech A01, and the main differnce is the ADBV is silicon. The Purolator had a slightly bigger can. Both have dome end bypasses.

I have never had a problem with a Purolator, Pure One or the Advance Auto derivative. I employed three last weekend in my Passat, Tercel and my daughter's Corolla. I have no reason to change to another brand.

The L40017 is a heavier duty filter than most Purolators. The one I just pulled off the motorhome (with 4600 miles) looked really good when I cut it open. As I said, this one has the threaded end bypass like Wix.

In fall of 2005 Subaru USA switched over to Purolator as their replacement filter supplier. There were so many complaints about the filters leaking or seeping at the base that Subaru reverted back to the Japanese manufactured (Tokyo Roki) filter.

Wow, this is sort of amazing. I think I've only ever read of one other Purolator "failure" (leaking oil, not cosmetic) here at BITOG. And now we have two second-hand acounts in the same thread...odd.

Mobil 1, now Purolator...I wonder what's up for scrutiny next?

I've ALWAYS changed my own oil and filters, except when I had a few "free" oil changes on a Saab I had. Tonight, I had my very first oil filter LEAKER...only bad enough to ooze, it was from the seal area. It was on a Subaru 2.5 engine, and it was a Purolator Premium Plus 14612. It was the last of the PPP's I had, and I'm using the Wix 51365 now on both my Subaru's, as well as a Vulcan V-twin 2053 cc motorcycle. The Wix certainly screws on the threads easier.

I have a PureOne currently on my Suzuki Forenza... I've used them a couple of times on my Tacoma without issues.. I'll have to take a closer look at them, or I might try the Napa Golds.

Purolator claims the PureONE is the SAE's highest rated oil filter...I searched on SAE's web site and couldn't find anything.

Purolator Premium Plus are great if you need a low cost oil filter. No need to spend alot to get a decent oil filter.

Same goes for SuperTech from Wally World.

I used a PureONE in my Mazda6. It was a bit too long and got crushed by the cartridge. OEM's for me from now on. #@$%!, the fram filter for my car is a really good filter compared to the PureONE, but no way will i pay $8 for it.

Yup, I am officially done with Purolator. I just got done changing the oil on my moms Olds 88. I really checked the Purolator Premium Plus over and lo and behold, there was TONS of paint flakes chillin on top of the anti drain back valve. I mean lots. I used my shop vac to pull as much out as I could and any remaining will likely end up in the filter media but who knows how many flakes end up on the clean side . I've only got one more round of oil changes worth of Purolators and that's it. Supertechs from here on out. Obviously better quality control and half as much in $$$.
